Dino Lite Digital Microscope
By Jestine Yong on October 20, 2010
There is a website recommended by Karlo about USB microscope that can act as a webcam and at the same time a microscope camera rolled into one. It has a software that can take a picture and measure the object you want. It comes with a boom/holder for the camera with different zoom level (up to 400X) and megapixels. This is good for repairing small SMDs in electronics equipment and you can use this to inspect fine cracks either on the component or on the board. At the moment there seems to have a problem in uploading the photo to my blog. I will try to rectify it. Please click on this link to visit the website.

It's magnifying is not bad but the cons is you have to handheld, and I find it inconvenience if you use it for motherboards and laptop repairs. That's one made in China and with a lamp and magnifier with stand and can be connected to a LCD monitor named Electronic Microscope and the price is around RM300++ inclusive of shipping. Hope can show the photo. Anyway it's only my opinion , I don't know about the other members of this blog. by the way thanks Jestine for the article.
God Bless

Hi Jestine,
We used the Dino Lite for accurate measurements since we are magnifying and repairing a PROBE CARD (used for testing wafers) and the tip is too small (usually 1.5 mil diameter) that is why we purchased the 400X. We are using it to measure the worn out tip!
The box comes with a calibration kit which makes it reliable.
But the 400X zoom is too close to the unit that you cannot insert the soldering iron. You need a lower Xzoom (around 20 to 50X) to view your circuit. My friend who repairs cellphones and has a store in one of the malls here bought only the 200X from China. He is using a 22" LCD. He get rid of his microscope.
The problem with the China alternative is the technical support. You get the item as is where is. It doesn't have a calibration kit. I don't know for the other China brand. So we are using it only to view the pcbs since it is only around 40 USD. It is also good for hobbyist.
If you don't need to measure anything, just viewing and taking pictures, and use it as an alternative to the magnifying glass for prolong usage, the China made scope is a good choice.

Hi Jestine,
I agreed with Karlo. When you buy any electronic items from China the after sales service is bad. I bought a infrared rework station direct from the factory, but the instruction is not much, ask them for technical support, they ask me to test using try and error. I have burn a few motherboards with it until I ask one technical friend from the philippines and he says not to look on the temperature settings just use a temperature thermometer on the chipset for the reading and you will not have any problems, that's my experience with the China machine.
Thanks Jestine God bless

HI Bernard,
Thanks for sharing about your experience. If China company could provide support to the products that they are selling, i guess they will get even bigger market.

Trying to deal Chinese support usually results in an unsatisfactory experience. Would LEDs help with the heat problem? I try to purchase from a US supplier that has a good return policy...that way I can send it back if I have problem with the return window. Good luck with repairing these small circuit boards I didn't know anyone was attempting repairs.
