altec lansing speaker repair

This computer speaker was brought to me by a regular customer stating that it was accidently dropped and the connectors have gone in. He tried to open, by pealing the speaker net thinking that there might be hidden screws. But the back cover of the main unit was fixed with glue to the front. I applied IPA on the joints repeatedly and with a little bit of prying, it came off. I saw the PCB was broken near the fixing nut and was displaced inside due to the impact. Surprisingly the plastic did not break as it was a good quality material, though made in China.

I removed the mounting screws and pulled up the PCB to seat properly. I soldered the portion where the track was torn and also did a general dry solder patch up. I applied superglue and sprinkled the bonding powder (this is fine dust, a byproduct when tiles are cut or ground) Here are the pictures of the inside:

Then, when I applied power and input audio, it was found working very well. I cleaned and lubricated the volume control too.

Then fixed the back cover and applied fresh glue on the mesh as well as at the joints and tied it well with rubber bands, The customer collected it back happily stating that his son was using it and he would only be too glad to get it back in working condition.

Mission accomplished causing smiling satisfaction getting added to the prestigious collections!

You can and will fix ANYTHING it seems.
All those speakers need is a good cleaning and a fresh coat of spray paint and it'll be good as new and last many more years.

    Well done!

Since the customer was himself an electrician-cum-minor-electronics-technician, he said he would do the rest and that's why I left at it. Many thanks for your comments and encouragement!
