honda speedometer repair

This Analogue speedometer/odometer which had fuel indicator was brought to me by a regular customer. After handling the digital speedometer of my own TVS Wego two wheeler long back, this is the second time I was handling speedometer. It was his mechanic who told him that the fuel indicator was not working and it can be fixed by only an electronic technician. That’s how it landed on my table.

Though I was skeptical about my role in this, I opened the meter using the skills that I had opening watches, clocks and timepieces during my youth. The method was to carefully pluck out the needles, remove the dial holding screws and open it from the front. Let us have an inside view, which is after removing the coil from its holding screws to the rear:

There were two resistors, out of which one was found burnt, which had a band of green, brown and black followed by gold apart from another red band at extreme end.

The value therefore was 5.1 Ohms.

5.1 Ohms

After removing the burnt resistor and one end of the other resistor, I checked continuity using my Analogue Multimeter (X1 range). I was excited to see the rotor turning clockwise and anticlockwise, when I switched the probes. I just fixed the needle and played with it for a few minutes like a child, recalling my halcyon days! Well, we rarely get such opportunities. As the exact value was not available, I used a 4.7 Ohms with a 0.39 Ohms in series to make the total 5.09

which was close enough. I fixed the dial and needles back and closed the case, deriving satisfaction of a different kind to get added to the collection.

I guess it was the right resistor value because when we use this resistor calculator on https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/tools/resistor-color-code-calculator/
reading the 4 band or 5 band resistor color code always seems trouble.
Especially if it here tells us that it is a 51 ohm resistor instead.

But apparently all 5 band resistors with the 4th band of silver or gold form an exception and are utilized on specific or older resistors. The first two bands represent the significant digits, the 3rd band is a multiplication factor, the 4th band is for tolerance, and the 5th band is for the temperature coefficient (ppm/K). And in that case the value 5,1 ohm is correct.

Also good to know is this about Deviating Resistor Band Colors...
To prevent metal and other particles from getting in the coating of high-voltage resistors, the gold and silver bands are often replaced with yellow and gray bands.

Many thanks for your comments and sharing very valuable information on resistors, its values and how to read them, with even a link. That's very nice of you! Even the electronic shops knew very well about the value for a speedometer and they too guided.

Vow! Many thanks for your wonderful comments, dear! To tell you frankly, I learnt repair of watches and clocks when I was studying in the shcool, from a neighbour, who was a professional watch repairer. I used to go there and help him, in the process of which I could do repair of watches and clocks easily within an year's exposure.
