Help from Digital Camera

By on December 17, 2011

The other day i was repairing a DELL LCD Monitor and it has some SMD components on it. Just before i took out the SMD components i took a close up picture of the circuit board. After taken out the smd components for testing especially the smd diodes suddenly i realized that i have forgotten which solder point is the cathode and which one is anode. Fortunately i have the photo with me and by referring the photo i could easily put the smd diodes back to its original location. This kind of problem will not happen if you are checking on the conventional diode because you are only removing one leg. For smd diodes you need to remove the whole diode. And at the same time my mind have some other repair things to think about causing me to have forgotten on the diode direction where i suppose to put back.

If you are troubleshooting a circuit board especially the board fill with lots of SMD components i suggest that you take a photo with your digital camera. Sometimes human do make mistake and they can’t remember everything and you need a backup to help you out. If you have been following my blog for few years you would have known that i do have a digital voice recorder to help me to remember. While driving, walking, chatting and if out of sudden there came an idea about something (that can help me to solve, improve, develop and etc) i would use the digital voice recorder to record all it down. Whenever I’m free i will play back the recorder and with this way i will not forget the good ideas.

    HI Isaac,

It can be very confusing especially diode that do not have marking. It can be any part number but usually i will just us 1N4148 as replacementto test it out.
