Home Made Flyback Tester
By Jestine Yong on November 18, 2008
One of my ERG member had successfully built a flyback tester base on the schematic from Dick Smith flyback tester and he agreed to let me post his project for all readers in this blog to see. The tester has a very nice design and creative too and he had done a great job of fixing the tester. He is from Egypt and already in the TV repair business since 1980 and loved electronics very much. According to him he drawed the layout by his own using the program call Quickroute 2.0. Well done Refaat!
By the way, if you have any photos of electronics project that you wish to share out to the readers of this blog, you may email me-thanks!

Is this flyback tester a kit ready to assembly or do you have to find all the parts like pcb, resistor, and other such components.

hi mr yong..I'd like to ask if the first LED of flyback tester will light when not connected to test device?. I made a flyback tester. Im sorry for the inventor Bob Parker I copied his invention because no budget to buy it..This is only for personal use Im not a repair man. I use it on my TV when its broken. Its effective. I am an electronics engineer. I work in the government. I use PCB Express to layout. I made it in a photosensitive PCB from Alexan.
Thanks for this tester Bob Parker.

Thanks Mr. Yong..I also discover that the Dick Smith Flyback Tester of Mr. Bob Parker can also be use as ESR meter. I test it with 1 to 15 ohms resistor and the 1st LED turns off but when I test on 20 ohms it doesn't turn off. I try above 20 ohms to 100 ohms the 1st LED still turns ON. The typical ESR reading is ranging from .1 to 10 ohms or 20 ohms according to the chart of Dick Smith ESR metere k7214 depending on the type of capacitor. I test it with defective electrolytic capacitor with high ESR, the 1st LED doesn't turn off but when I test it with good capacitor the same capacitance value, the 1st LED turns off and that confirms me that the bad caps I test has a high ESR value. I try it with electrolytic capacitor from .5uF upto 330uF and the higher the capacitance the lesser the ESR reading almost shorting the leads of the meter at zero ohms.

HI Chris,
Thanks for taking the time to perform such test. Since flyback tester do not have a good indicator to locate bad caps it would be very hard to locate those caps that have marginal result.

I want to built my own flyback tester,do you have a schematic diagram,i am interested for the kit. Here in the Manila,Philippines we go flyback testing center to test for the flyback ,we pay for about 25 pesos each test.So i decided to build one for my electronic shop, so i can save time going there.
thanks,

Hi there Justine!
I just received you ebook on SMPS repair! Seriously can't stop reading! Thanx! I saw this link for the Dick Smith LOPT tester, and wanted to ask you whether it would operate using a 9V battery instead? I luv 9V batteries 🙂

Hi Jestine
I have downloaded the assembly manual for the discontinued K7205 LOPT tester. The only thing is in the parts list there is no reference to the voltage of the 0.047UF MKT and 0.01UF MKT capacitors. Could you advise please? Also can you tell me of a supplier where I can purchase them off the web please?
Cheers
Phil

HI Phil,
You can use a 50 or 100 volt caps. The k7205 lopt tester is no longer in the market. The market currently selling the Blue Ring Tester which have exactly the same function as K7205.
