Interesting Question

By on July 10, 2008

I got this interesting question from one of my ERG member. This is the question:

Dear Mr Yong,

Mr Yong, base on your experience, if i change all the component on the PCB board without checking which component is faulty, its means that the PCB can function again?

How would you like to answer this kind of question?

I told him that yes it is possible unless he can 100% confirm that only that section have problem. We all knew that sometimes a problem in one section could cause another section to have problem too like taking the case of SMPS repair where a shorted diode in the secondary side could cause primary side to have problem too. That means even though you could change all of the components in the secondary side the SMPS might not be function due to that there is still a problem in primary side.

It is O K for simple circuit with minimal components.

It is not a logical approach of solving an electronic problem and definitely not for professionals. You only end up with waste of time and money.
