LED Light Not Coming On And Not Charging Repaired
An American who lives in Jerusalem and also a good friend of mine brought two LED lights that do not work. He used them in filming since that are tiny devices yet give out a decent amount of light to produce a decent image on camera.
It is a very good quality device and it was worth fixing according to the customer.
I connected it to my USB charging tester and yes the voltage was coming out yet the amp charging rate was not present.
That was the reading on my USB charger testing so seems and it was time to open one of these LED light and get it fixed.
Let the fun begins.
Four screws were off and I was able to see the inside of this thing. I am very impressed with the design of it and of course the easy access to the parts inside.
I took the top board off and I was able to see what beneath it and when I checked it under my microscope everything seems to be in good order.
When I checked the charging port on the inside pins everything seems to be in good shape but when I checked the outside pins they had bad cold joints and I had to reflow them all and hope for the best.
By the way the battery level was reading less than 1.3 volts out of 7.6 and that was very low.
After re flowing the outside pins of the charging ports it was charging fine but it took a while for the battery to kick in since the level was too low so I helped the charging by using an external power supply and soon enough it was up and it was charging fine on its own.
As seen in the photo, the amp charging rate was almost up to 1 amp and the battery was charging fine.
I charged it fully and tested the light and as seen the device was up and running according to specs. I did the same exact thing to the other device and it had the same problem so both no working LED lights are working just fine.
I called the customer but he was out of the country so he sent someone else to pick the devices he brought for repair.
Mission Accomplished.

So many times something that simple gets overlooked… especially by us hobbyists. Great work!!! It’s a lesson to be learned by me … I’d of probably wasted a lot of time trying to pinpoint some component as opposed to just checking for dry solder joints on the power supply port.

Tim: usually this is the second thing I check after eye balling if there is an obvious damaged parts on board and most of the times saves me time and effort. have a blessed day

Good fix Waleed. Happy to see this high quality device was saved. Can you think of anyway to reinforce these ports so the mechanical stresses can be handled better?

Tayo: thanks man. to enforce such parts is only by good solid soldering but that eventually going to break. just do your best in anything you do. have a blessed day

Good job, but for such a decent and expensive made led light they maybe better should have selected a proper stronger power plug jack instead of using those weak usb connector charging ports! Those also at least never fail at the soldered connections.

I agree Albert . they should be using the 5.5 MM X 2.5 power plug or 2.1 same size ..... There is a issue with all power ports , or should I say they all have one thing in common , no lead solder and wave soldering , a lot of older equipment was hand soldered and used lead solder .... Very seldom did I have to reflow solder joints on the older Cobra , Uniden , and President radio chassis's etc etc ...

Hollis: all charging ports are destined to fail eventually and that is good for us as technicians(LOL). it could be bad manufacture or user fault either way, good income. have a blessed day

Albert: thanks man. totally agree but on the other hand all electronic parts is destined to fail eventually. have a blessed day

Yogesh: thanks man. yes indeed my friend and it is a very good idea to invest in one. it does not have to be expensive but a decent one that show you things can not be see with our naked eyes. have a blessed day
