Motherboard Repair

By on June 23, 2008

 pc motherboard

I had stopped repairing PC motherboard  since i left my former computer distributor company back in 1994. Those days the famous motherboard board were the 486sx, 486dx and the Pentium. I was provided with every model of the motherboard schematic diagrams,  Chipset (all range of IC’s), SMD desoldering tools, troubleshooting notes and even the POST diagnostic card. Repairing PC motherboards on those days were quite easy but i doubt nowadays it will be easy unless you are working in the motherboard manufacturers or you have the sources for all kind information related to motherboard.

Occasionally i do have motherboard sent for repair by my friend who deal with selling computer systems. Most of the time was the electrolytic capacitors bulged and quite simple to fix it. Nowadays PC motherboard is quite cheap and less people want to repair it and prefer to buy a new board unless if the motherboard is in the higher range (branded). As mentioned, if you can’t source for the parts it would be very difficult to repair the board. Those days the boards were only using normal SMD IC’s (spider IC’s) but most of the motherboard now are using the BGA IC’s which is very difficult to extract unless you have the special equipment to do the job.

It will be very time consuming to do this precision job unless the profit that you gonna make could cover your cost otherwise it would not be economical to repair the motherboard. If any of the readers in my blog repair motherboard i would like to listen to what you have to say about motherboard repairing business-thanks

    Hi,

I am from the USA and also getting in the business of repairing motherboards, specifically laptops motherboards. I have got to travel to places like the huaqiang market in shenzhen china and bangkok in thailand where we can see that motherboard repair still makes economic sense. Thanks Trion for this very good briefing on motherboard repair techniques. I am currently looking for a schematic for the motherboard on a HP DV100 as this board has a lot of electrical problems. Please send it to tomheg at gmail dot com if you have one available!

    thanks

    Dear Jestine
I have a plasma TV HP PL4260N manufactured in 2006. I bougt it brand new through Internet last year (2008). Today from one moment to another I have no picture, only audio. I called the HP Support and they said me that the warranty for this model is expired. I told them that I bought in 2008 brand new and the guy repited me that the warranty has expired. I asked what had happened and he told me to unplug the TV and them press the botom of turn on for few seconds, then plug the TV but nothing happened. He told me that the problems is the motherboard and that the repair cost will be $ 629.00. I told him that it is too expensive because the TV cost me $ 1,350.00. I told him how it was that they produced a TV for 3 years of life. Result, I will have to pay $ 629.00 to HP to fix my TV. Do you think that somebody can help me to fix the motherboard for less money? That price is too expensive for me.

PIPON, your problem is acommon one for your TV, it is almost laways cuased by the YSUS PCB(Y sustain board). You can purchase this PCB for around $160, or if you want to repair it I would first check for connection problems on the YSUS board and check all caps. While you are in there check all the caps in the SMPS, they run hard and hot in these plasma sets and often the secondary caps are puffed and vented, good to replace them while you are in ther working on the YSUS board.

    Hi Peter,

If the voltages from the power supply to the motherboard is good and no display from the motherboard then the motherboard is dead.

    Hi Nkwah,

Have you replace the power supply. A missing On signal will cause no display symptom on the motherboard.

    HI Mohammed,

Guess that you may need to check out all components in the primary side of SMPS. If all tested okay then direct replace the power IC and retest the set. Hope this helps!

Hi, I have a foxconn mainboard, The IC chip between the pci express x16 slot and pci slots is getting hot. I've replaced quite a few caps in the circuit, still the same issue. The board switches on and I get display, but after the post screen it hangs, I have no drives connected, There is a silver resistor next to the IC, I put 1 on from another board, it then ran cool, but I got no display this time, then I put the old resistor back and it switched on again and hangs at the same place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've came across a typical problemm during formatting the hard disk drive of capacity 10GB. Formerly after partitioning of the drive in CD-ROM Booting mode the process was not carrying ahead. I thought that was happened due to improper capacity of RAM which the customer have (i.e. 128 MB). But the installation of windows XP would required 128 MB of RAM.

I took the HDD and attached that with the motherboard of AMD Athlon 64 proccessor and then all the processess carried on smoothly without any further disturbances. But again as soon as I istalled the HDD in the customer's motherboard (which is of Pentium class- 533 MHz) the system gets hanged-up at each booting steps. The system get fully hanged after the accomplishing of the bus.

I've taken every sorts of probbing (investigation) but the problem still lies the same. Kindly suggest me to troubleshoot the problem.
