Motherboard Repair

By on June 23, 2008

 pc motherboard

I had stopped repairing PC motherboard  since i left my former computer distributor company back in 1994. Those days the famous motherboard board were the 486sx, 486dx and the Pentium. I was provided with every model of the motherboard schematic diagrams,  Chipset (all range of IC’s), SMD desoldering tools, troubleshooting notes and even the POST diagnostic card. Repairing PC motherboards on those days were quite easy but i doubt nowadays it will be easy unless you are working in the motherboard manufacturers or you have the sources for all kind information related to motherboard.

Occasionally i do have motherboard sent for repair by my friend who deal with selling computer systems. Most of the time was the electrolytic capacitors bulged and quite simple to fix it. Nowadays PC motherboard is quite cheap and less people want to repair it and prefer to buy a new board unless if the motherboard is in the higher range (branded). As mentioned, if you can’t source for the parts it would be very difficult to repair the board. Those days the boards were only using normal SMD IC’s (spider IC’s) but most of the motherboard now are using the BGA IC’s which is very difficult to extract unless you have the special equipment to do the job.

It will be very time consuming to do this precision job unless the profit that you gonna make could cover your cost otherwise it would not be economical to repair the motherboard. If any of the readers in my blog repair motherboard i would like to listen to what you have to say about motherboard repairing business-thanks

I get this message every time I turn my Pc on :
    CMOS Settings Wrong
    CMOS DAte/time not set
    Overclocking failed
    press F1 to...setup
    Press F2 to...default values

My motherboard is an Asus P4P8X ,my graphics card is an Asus nvidia GeForce 5200, and I'm running on Win XP. I did overclock but it worked perfectly for months, until one day when it started howing these messages everytime I start up. Now, even if I set the setting to Standard (no overclock), I still get the message every time I turn my PC on. However, when I Restart/ Reset my PC, I don't get this message. Any ideas on how to solve this? And could you give simple, step-by-step instructions? I've read through some of the other threads and most of the time I could only understand about 1/3 of what is being explained. Sorry. Thanks

    HI Gir,

It could be the battery, or even the 1uf cap. Sometimes the IC that control the clock may have problem.

    Dear Jestine Yong.
If you have the right equipment for BGA rework it is
not that difficult, but you are absolutely correct, no information no repair, we need components data shit, board diagram, post code reader
    and other pertinent information.
Sometime a very expansible motherboard, may worth
to be repaired, in some countries, where the wages are
cheaper than in the United States and Europe.
Very long time ago, any mother board repair, any defect
could be done in about forty minutes or less.
I was also doing repair on the other boards also, but
    no more.
Nowadays we trow it in the garbage.

The components level repairs are going down to drains.
I am now, involved with electronics projects, using Intel
Atmel zilog and other microprocessor. applied to CNC, Servos
Robotics and others Industrial and Medical equipments.
I do like much more making projects, than doing repairs.
Look at www.dmmengine.com/FoamMasterII-4X for some of my designs.
I enjoy doing also, all the Machine design, All Electronics, mechanical 3D CAD/CAM, Firmware and some Software.
Other professionals did not moved from the repair field, and just
got adapted to lower level of boards replacement repairs.
Some time I have to do that also, but I do not like it.

This is the way I am.

    Thank you.

Looking for information on Motherboards in general. Looking at pictures of Motherboards online the socket is my question,,, AMD Am2, AM2+ and AM3 have inverted socket holes on Motherboards and the CPU has the pins. However I am new to Intel. The i7 socket 1366 The board has the pins? and the CPU is inverted? Reversed from AMD. AMD CPU's go bad with bent pins. Did Intel reverse it so if the pins are damaged they can be replaced? Can bent pins on a Intel motherboard be fixed by replacing the socket? Would be very helpful if you could advise me on this. I cant find info on this. I found your page and thought you would be the person who would know. E- mail me back. Willrhodes@ymail.com I thank You... Will Rhodes
