Motherboard Repair

By on June 23, 2008

 pc motherboard

I had stopped repairing PC motherboard  since i left my former computer distributor company back in 1994. Those days the famous motherboard board were the 486sx, 486dx and the Pentium. I was provided with every model of the motherboard schematic diagrams,  Chipset (all range of IC’s), SMD desoldering tools, troubleshooting notes and even the POST diagnostic card. Repairing PC motherboards on those days were quite easy but i doubt nowadays it will be easy unless you are working in the motherboard manufacturers or you have the sources for all kind information related to motherboard.

Occasionally i do have motherboard sent for repair by my friend who deal with selling computer systems. Most of the time was the electrolytic capacitors bulged and quite simple to fix it. Nowadays PC motherboard is quite cheap and less people want to repair it and prefer to buy a new board unless if the motherboard is in the higher range (branded). As mentioned, if you can’t source for the parts it would be very difficult to repair the board. Those days the boards were only using normal SMD IC’s (spider IC’s) but most of the motherboard now are using the BGA IC’s which is very difficult to extract unless you have the special equipment to do the job.

It will be very time consuming to do this precision job unless the profit that you gonna make could cover your cost otherwise it would not be economical to repair the motherboard. If any of the readers in my blog repair motherboard i would like to listen to what you have to say about motherboard repairing business-thanks

    Hi All,

This is Raja from Kumbakonam. Can you please help me to repair my motherboard. My problem is my cpu's back panel connector was damaged. Is it possible to change that alone. Waiting for reply...

    Thanks,
    Raja.

    HI Raja,

Sorry, i no longer repair motherboard. However, if you have the connector you can try to replace it. It will be a little tough to replace parts in a high density components board.

    HI Altaf,

If you have check that the supply, ram and cpu are okay then the problem could be in the Chipset. This chipset is not easy to find.

I would like to comment that I have as an interest repaired a few motherboards, and I have had most of the boards come back to life.
I am self taught with help from Google here and their. One board I have not been able to bring back was a Dell GX 280, most of my repair work has been limited to replacing bad cap's. I dont have many tool's just a soldering iron and proper solder, no desoldering tool's to my name.
I just find it interesting to revive one as I don't have the funds to run out and buy a replacment board every time one of my board's die.
    Cheers

    HI Ronald,

Replacing bulged e-caps can bring many motherboard to life but getting the right spare parts (ICs) is the most toughest thing in this repair trade.

    HI Abhilash,

When the IC shorted it can draw lots of current and this will shutdown the power supply. It can be many reason why the chipset get heated. Quality of the chipset, a too high supply voltage or even bad corresponding components can cause this problem.

    HI Shafi,

The only thing that you can do is to make sure the supply voltage to the motherboard is good and stable and there are no bulged capacitors. Other than this it could be the IC fault. Sourcing for the right IC chipset is not easy. You may need a PC post card to help you to diagnose the problem.

Hi there I am the only one in my town who does motherboard repair. Right now I have two PC shops as clients. I started doing it a couple of years ago, practicing on boards I don't care about.

Right now with the economy the way it is, a lot of people don't have $600-$700 to get the latest PC. My rates are reasonable and my clients are more than happy to pay it.

Like the article says, mobo repair makes sense on a fairly new board. At the very most the whole process takes me an hour to do.

The benefit is clients don't have to reinstall Windows, they don't lose their stuff and start over from scratch.

    Hi Jestine Yong

    Good morning .

I have Pentium D processor and Intel 865 mother board. Due to power surge the system display is not at coming. even it is not starting , given to service people they verified smps , fan all fine only board and processor gone , they asked me to buy new one .

Pls suggest , is it like that the design , if some capasitors or transistors gone we have to throw the board and buy new one only ?

We cant service the mother board? pls advice where to do service in Chennai , India

    Thanks
