Permanent Line On LCD Monitor

By on September 22, 2008

I got quite a number of emails asked whether one permanent vertical or horizontal line can be repair or not. The line is usually a white line. My answer to them is still “No” if you have confirm that there is no dry contacts between the LCD panel screen and the LCD controller board. If it is a dry contact, you can know it by pressing on the board area that produced the line (vertical or horizontal). The line problem in LCD Monitors are most probably cause by a defective LCD driver IC and there is no way we could replace the IC.

lcd vertical line

If i come across permanent line on LCD Monitor, i will send back the Monitor to customers (normally customer don’t want to repair because a used or a new lcd panel are very costly) or offer them a good price to buy over so that i could salvage the Main board and power/inverter board and in some models i could have their power pack too for future use!

If its one single or multiple DISTINCT lines, the lcd panel is defective.

If its a horizontal or vertical band of lines (lcd panels display image in 8 or more vertical bands), the driver (aka T-Con) board is bad. Look for cold solder joints on the T-con board.

There was a Toshiba service bulletin about their LCD. They suggest heating up the ribbon cable connection on the LCD display with a soldering iron through a wax paper until the line disappears. Doesn't work everytime but well worth a try.

I have found cleaning/reseating the LVDS Cable and rubbing along the edge of the panel where the line occurs sometimes help.

    Hi Faizul,

It could be a dry contact and you need to open up the lcd cover and test it out by applying some pressure on it.

Greetings from Cyprus. Any help and advise you can give me to the problem described herebelow, will be greatly appreciated.
Had a Power Supply problem with a 5-month old Toshiba 57 inch LCD TV model 57Z3030DB.
The red light in the front of the set started flashing once every second. The problem could have been created from very small water spillage.
I changed the Bridge rectifier diode near one of the power connectors and the TV worked. HOWEVER two vertical lines about 12cm each appeared in the centre of the screen changing colour according to the picture colour. The lines are irregular, one has a small branch andeven a small circle attached to it.
I wonder if the problem is the rectifier bridge diode and whether if I change the entire Power Supply Board, will solve this problem.
Also if it is a problem that you faced before as few local technicians that I contacted have never faced this problem before.
Thank you in anticipation of any advise that you can give me.

    Hi Stelios,

If the power supply has all the outputs then suspect lcd panel problem. I came across lots of lcd monitor panel fault like just the one you have described.

    Dear Sir,

    Good Morning.
I have Toshiba Satellite (Laptop) 17" Wide - now two vertical lines appeared (left side of the screen) - the lines are yellow & light blue.

Yellow line appeared about 3 weeks already suddenly light blue appeared last night.

I read from previous comment (below) - suggesting heating up the ribbon cable connection on the LCD display with soldering iron through a wax paper until line disappears.

    Thanks & Regards,

Hi, I have a 14.1" ACER Laptop and It has suddenly developed white lines going horizontally , only about 2mm each but its right in the centre so very annoying. It started with one and has gone up to 4 in a matter of about two weeks.
My question is, has the screen had it or is it worth me trying the solder/wax paper trick?
    Many thanks

    Hi,

I bought a 42 inches LCD (Sharp AQUOS) few months ago. It has been working great. Yesterday, a vertical violet/Pink line about an inch appeared suddenly from the top to the bottom of the screen when I was watching a movie, it remains on all channels.

When I switched off the monitor by removing the wire from electricity plug for about an hour, the line disappears but it reappears again after watching for few hours.I don't know what to do. The TV is under warranty, I'm afraid that they will fix it and the problem will arise again so what's the problem and should I ask for a new TV?

    Hi Yazan,

It seems like there was an intermittent connection problem in the LCD panel. Guess you might need to send the TV back fro warrant claim. Usually they will have to replace the LCD panel. Have a good day!

The real problem with the single line is dust inside your monitor. How many people have been ripped off by this simple fact of Life would amaze us all. Simply vacuum or blow your monitor's backside with compressed air and I bet you the line goes away. I have seen it on no less than 5 times completely correct the problem no computer geek necessary, no complicated computer explanations, just dust interfering with the performance of your LCD minitor. Go ahead, give it a try.

    HI Kat,

It is the contact or the internal lcd driver ic have problem. Try press the top part of the lcd where the line is and see if there is any different or not. If no different then it may be the ic or the tcp package have problem. If the line gone, then it is contact problem.

    Hi JAI,

Since you have used another LCD monitor on this laptop and the display still the same then most probably the mainboard or the graphic chipset have problem. If the inverter have problem the display will become dim and won't cause such problem as what you have described. As for the part, sorry i do not have information about the chipset. One more thing, make sure the supply voltages to the mainboard are good and stable.

    HI Izza,

Most of the line problems are due to bad LCD Panel. If there is no dry joints or bad connection then most probably the problem is in the lcd panel.

    Hi Dave,

Usually you can't see the damage because the problem could be one of the lcd driver ic have problem. If there is a single line, we can suspect the ribbon cable or dry joints problem but if there is a 4" gap of vertical line then the lcd driver ic could be the cause of the problem. There is no way to replace such an ic.

It seems like there is a loose contact in the tcp package. Try open the lcd and gently press on the edge where the line is located.

    Hey Justin!
I have a VA712B Viewsonic lcd fp monitor that has the same perminent thin lines going vertical (green, purple & red) down the r.s. of the screen. Just got through replacing the (generic brand)external psu 12v adaptor for not powering up & was successful at getting it to power back up but now i'm stuck with those lines. If I replace the screen alone will it fix the problem, or will I have to replace the invertor board also?
You mentioned about the "Driver IC" being bad is what led me to believe that was my problem.
Oh! I am a member of your newsletter & have contacted you before a very long time ago on a Dell monitor which by the way I fixed it as well & working fine.

Those permanent lines are cause by bad LCD panel and is not related to inverter. Replacing the lcd panel should solve the problem.

    Hello to you, Dear Sir
I hope you have any advice for an issue I have with a three year old Gateway W350 laptop
A few months back I was getting blue screens and shut off, on the screen I would get error memory dump messages, two different friends who claim to know told me the video card or graphics card was giving up, mostly due to heat, I took lid off. plugged a fan uner it at all times, so it runs cooler now, no more blue screens, but yesterday I had one single yellow line appear vertically on the right side, sometimes light blue, and today it disappeared, my friend says laptop video card is about to go, would you have any advice for me please? I live in a dusty environment could it be just dirt? Is there anything to save my computer?

    HI Alfatrazi,
There may be a loose contact. Try gently press/hold the affected area to see if the line will go off or not. If it can go off then there is a loose contact and you may need to think of a way to apply some pressure to the lcd screen internally so that the vertical line will not appear again.

Greetings from Greece. I have a car in-dash Player with LCD screen that suddenly started showing a permanent thin (one pixel)horizontal white line near the top. I dismantled the unit, checked all ribbon connectors, and there doesn't seem to be any dry joints. Do you think this line indicates a problem with the screen (INNOLUX AT070TN07)or with the driving circuit that is external to the screen? I am thinking of buying a new screen and replacing it, but at almost $100 for a replacement one, I would like to be pretty sure where the problem lies before spending my money. Any advice would surely be appreciated.

    HI Zonker,

It can be the driving circuit or the lcd panel. If the driving circuit is a separate board from the lcd panel then there is a chance that you can replace the driving circuit and retest. From experience, more than 90% of horizontal/vertical line problem were caused bay bad LCD panel.

    Hi Jestine,

This morning I had a problem with my Dell D630 LCD (1440x900, made by LG). I have closed the lid to move the laptop in another room and after I opened it, I saw a one pixel horizontal line in the middle of the display. After searching on the internet for solutions, I tried the pressure one. The line dissapeared the moment I touched the LCD in that point.

One solution that I think it is good to solve this kind of problem is to remove the display's plastic bezel and put paper between the LCD frame (the metal one, that holds the components togheter) and the LCD. This way, there will be constant pressure on the dry contact. I choose paper because it is very thin and you can put several small pieces of paper one on top of the other until there is some pressure applied.

This method haven't been tested, but in case that my problem appears again (hopefully not), I will try it and post results.

    Have a nice day!

May I disassemble more stuff at this point to make a permanently connection.?Thanks a lot .. bye ..

This confirmed that there is contact problem. I guess you may need to place in a thick rubber in between the panel and the cover unless if you could find the T-shape metal that is connected to solder gun to reheat the joint.
