Play Station 4 With Overheating Issue Repaired
A customer brought this play station for repair. He said, it works fine but it displays over heating messages on the screen then it shuts down. He already bought play station 5 so he wants to repair this one and sell it.
I have done this kind of job; usually the overheating issues that these devices display
have to do with dirt and dust accumulation inside the device blocking the cooling air from reaching the sensitive parts of it.
As expected, I saw this the moment I lift the lid off this device and I am expecting more as we go further in the device.
If this what is on the surface, what kind of disaster I am expecting on the main cooling vent near the fan? Let us find out.
A lot of screws have to come off to get to the main board and check out the thermal paste there.
Here is the main board and as seen in the photo, it is all dusty and need some cleaning here.
That is what comes beneath the main board; another two screws and I will be able to see the main cooling vent attached to the main fan.
Finally, I got to the fan and it is all dirty and needed cleaning as well, but the main issue with this device is this…take a look
The vent is completely shut with dirt and dust and I was not surprised this machine was shutting down due to heat.
I am glad these play stations has this safety procedures to shut down when it is overheated otherwise the main APU and the GPU will be shorted because of this heat.
This is the finish product after the cleaning of this vent and the main fan.
The main chip was cleaned and a fresh thermal paste was added to it.
And that was not the end of his messy dirty machine, the USB ports needed some cleaning as well.
More cleaning to be done here as well, and to be honest, this is the dirtiest PS 4 I have seen in my life. I am also wondering what kind of house this customer lives in? If all this dirt inside, I am sure it is coming from somewhere in that house… just a thought.
Anyway, after all this cleaning, adding a thermal paste to the main IC and putting everything back together, the customer came for pick up and saw his PS4 up and running ( sorry no photo as this time since the customer was in the shop).
That was a very messy repair but the result was up and running PS4 and to that, I could say:
Mission Accomplished.

Good write up Brother Waleed. Dust buildup is a big problem on machines with active cooling. What I do (with my desktop computer anyway) is to put a piece of air filter over the inlet ports. This catches A LOT of dust and prevents me from having to open the case to clean the internals very often. The system may increase the fan speed to overcome whatever reduced airflow the filter may cause. Meaning the fan may have to spin faster and run a little louder under heavy loads but I have hardly noticed a thing.

Tayo: thanks man. I would not put anything blocking the vents even if it was just a piece of filter. I would just clean it every once in a while because like you said, the fan is going to be running fast and on the long run damaging it. have a blessed day

If more of these dusty machines keep coming your way you may as well start a cleaning business! (lol).

Perhaps your client lives along a dusty street. The problem with most house hold electronics consumers is lack of periodical maintenance culture. In my area I do educate my customers as par this, you know what! no one has ever yielded, they would rather wait till their devices breaks down completely.
Thanks for sharing.

Imoudu: totally agree with you. they wait till the last minuted when the machines goes dead then they worry about the repair. my brother's welding machines are being maintained once every two or three months depending on the use of them and so far they have not break down due to continues care. I tried to put some kind of sense into these people but so far, it is not working. have a blessed day
