Repair Tricks

Here are two repair tricks shared by Darren W.

“Something to add to your dvd player tricks. I have seen many that couldn’t hold speed (motor) so I unplug motor and use 9volt battery to spin it up for a few seconds going both directions. I have determined that too many players keep the disc spinning when not playing and brushes get clogged up. Spinning up with 9volts in both directions for just a few seconds in each directions cleans them off enough to make it work well again”

A vcr trick for polishing video heads is to use a 3″ x 5″ file card, folded in half three times, and gently touch the head while it is spinning.  I have a tape playing while I am doing it so I can see the picture improve.  I do that after a normal cleaning to polish the tiny little heads.  The paper is just a little bit abrasive and puts a nice shine on the tiny heads.  Be careful though, if you slow the video head down by, say 20%, it’s ok, but any more than that and you could damage them.
