Repairing Computer Motherboard

By on December 28, 2009

CPU MOTHERBOARD

I got a good blog post by Ranotosh on Computer motherboard repair. Here is the tips:

First of all thanks for your website,it is very useful for persons who are in the electronics field. I am a electronics hobbiest from kolkata(india). I want to share my experiences in motherboard repairing with the readers of your blog.

1. Check for any physical damage in the board i.e. burnt out parts, inflated (bulged) electrolytic capacitors, damaged tracks, burnt out ram slot, cracked chips etc.

2.In many cases SMPS stops in few seconds after power on,this is a indication of a short circuit in the motherboard. In most cases FET in the voltage regulation circuit get shorted.one can check with a multimeter for any shorted FET. Sometimes chips may get shorted, in that case one has to forcefully power on SMPS by shorting green and black wire of SMPS and look for any overheated chips.

3. Replace the bios from a similar motherboard.

These are the few basic techniques of chip level motherboard repair.

    Question

Is it possible to check the FET or the MOSFET without soldering out from the motherboard How?

    HI Rey,

It is not possible. If it is complete shorted then yes, you will find that all the pins have low ohm resistance under X1 ohm test with an analog meter.

    HI Anish,

Have you replaced the power supply? A bad power supply (missing good signal) could cause such problem.

hi there. i kinda destroyed my new pc today. i thought that my psu fan was pretty noisy, i tried to change the psu with my old psu. however, i changed my mind after taking the atx 20pin plug out.. after that i accidentally forced in the plug into the wrong pins of the 24pin connector. instead of leaving the top 4 pins empty, i forced the plug into them. if im not wrong, the computer turned on for a second then it died out. (remembered the cpu fan turning)

i realised that i put it wrongly and tried to fix it back. by the time i got it to the proper position, it no longer worked. pressing the on button didn't help, nor did changing the psu with an older one . theres more though... i accidentally switched the thing at the back of the psu to change it to 110v from 230v. when i turned it on, there was a spark and a smell coming from the psu. (the psu was connected to the motherboard at that time).

i checked the damaged psu on another motherboard. it couldn't turn on. other psu could turn on my old motherboard but cannot turn on my new motherboard. (all the fans & hard disks cannot run either.)

im wondering if my motherboard is fixable and if my parts are damaged or not (eg. cpu, ect). should i get a new motherboard if my current one is spoilt? or should i send the motherboard for repair?

    thanks for your help.

oh yes.. there is one more thing i want to know. i was searching sites just now and then i saw one site saying something like the 4 pin atx 12v plug powers up the motherboard.. it might be that my second psu has a faulty 4 pin atx plug so i cant be sure if its a fault with my psu or motherboard or maybe even processor... is they any clue / sign in which tells me which is at fault?

    Thanks again!

    HI Alex,

The psu surely have problem already because you have set to 230 volt. As for the motherboard, you have to confirm it with another good board. if it bad, the best way is to get a new board.

    HI Waji,

Have you replace the power supply? If you have replace the power supply then it is the motherboard problem. It could be bad caps or even shorted IC then you need to test it out.
