Repairing Computer Motherboard
I got a good blog post by Ranotosh on Computer motherboard repair. Here is the tips:
First of all thanks for your website,it is very useful for persons who are in the electronics field. I am a electronics hobbiest from kolkata(india). I want to share my experiences in motherboard repairing with the readers of your blog.
1. Check for any physical damage in the board i.e. burnt out parts,inflated (bulged) electrolytic capacitors,damaged tracks, burnt out ram slot,cracked chips etc.
2.In many cases SMPS stops in few seconds after power on,this is a indication of a short circuit in the motherboard. In most cases FET in the voltage regulation circuit get shorted.one can check with a multimeter for any shorted FET. Sometimes chips may get shorted, in that case one has to forcefully power on SMPS by shorting green and black wire of SMPS and look for any overheated chips.
3. Replace the bios from a similar motherboard.
These are the few basic techniques of chip level motherboard repair.

I have dell optiplex 330 and 360 motherboard that will only show orange led and wont power-on. tried new ram, processors, power supply. but still wont not power-on.

i have micro 945 Mother board 775 socket from PSU +5V of SB (Violet Colour Wire) where it connect to mother Board Transistor that Transistor getting too much heating (over heating) any idea & subsitude Transistor that??

HI Mohan,
The only voltages you can check is from the ATX power supply. Make sure that all ICs in the board is receiving the right voltage by using digital meter.

Sir,
Mr. Jatendra Sharma Asking question in roman urdu. i understand and trying to solve..
Mr. jatindra your question is incomplete but you will be troubleshooted by tips.. step by step
1. PC start and check after off wheather pc lights on / off . if off then you check your SMPS power supply- ATX by test supply.
2. if PC lights on then need to be check mother board such as: under off conditon when work on board . AC wire un-plug under service.
i- ATX supply connectors tight on board .
ii- CMOS Cell remove and clear Bios .
iii- Retest PC. if fault present then RAM Slots Clean by Silicon
Brush and RAM Interface traces clean from Erasser lightly to
shine.
iv- Retest PC. if fault present than remove all devices power
connectors and data cables. also, remove external device /
cards. and retest.
v- if fault is present than check another matching Ram memory.
fault will be removed.
vi- Finally, if fault present than check your pc items on another
working board to tracce faulty device.
vii- Also, check your pc board by diss- assemble and check spacers, insulaters, and physically burning, damage on board print.
All things is not easy if you are new and Learner. but everything will be possible by Sharing views, Asking troubles from seniors, mind-set and experiences.

A bad power supply, ic in the mainboard could cause no display symptom. It is not easy to repair unless you have the POST card to guide you which area is having problem:

I accidently put a 3v battery into a 1.5v CMOS battery holder thinking it was the same battery. The circuit wire burnt slightly just enough to seperate. can I repair the circuit using copper tinned Buss Wire to rewire the circuit ? I heard of someone doing this on another type of repair and wanted to see if it might work. It is a pretty expensive board and if I can fix it cheap I won't have to sell anything to buy another one. I really hope you will get back to me. Thanks

It depends on the wire diameter and usually it can be used because the current consumption is not that high.

Is it possible to short circuit every circuit on a motherboard ? I just used a multimeter to check for shorted circuits and it said just about everything on the board was shorted I just got the multimeter and didn't know if that is even possible. I thought if a circuit burns that the rest would not be affected to the same degree but is it possible to short everything by putting the wrong voltage CMOS battery in ? I checked some resistors and they showed up correctly but everything else is showing short even on circuits that look fine.

If there is a cap shorted in the supply line and when you check on all points that is related to the supply line you will get shorted reading when tested it with an ohmmeter.
