Repairing Computer Motherboard

By on December 28, 2009

CPU MOTHERBOARD

I got a good blog post by Ranotosh on Computer motherboard repair. Here is the tips:

First of all thanks for your website,it is very useful for persons who are in the electronics field. I am a electronics hobbiest from kolkata(india). I want to share my experiences in motherboard repairing with the readers of your blog.

1. Check for any physical damage in the board i.e. burnt out parts, inflated (bulged) electrolytic capacitors, damaged tracks, burnt out ram slot, cracked chips etc.

2.In many cases SMPS stops in few seconds after power on,this is a indication of a short circuit in the motherboard. In most cases FET in the voltage regulation circuit get shorted.one can check with a multimeter for any shorted FET. Sometimes chips may get shorted, in that case one has to forcefully power on SMPS by shorting green and black wire of SMPS and look for any overheated chips.

3. Replace the bios from a similar motherboard.

These are the few basic techniques of chip level motherboard repair.

I am having another motherboard issue and wanted to know is you might have any ideas about it. I was replacing the northbridge heatsink on a dell dimension 2400 motherboard, a highly modified one. The heatsink on it was really stuck and then snapped off but it seemed like it was almost cooked on. It didn't seem like anything got hurt from it coming off but when I finished building the PC the video didn't work and when I use a seperate video card the same happens. I checked the monitor on another pc and its fine. The motherboard turns on fine and the normal post beep happens but I am not getting any video just a black screen is it possible to replace a northbridge chip or is it possible the northbridge is not working just from switching heatsinks? The computer runs and the post beep is normal. I am at a loss on this one. Any ideas of how to fix this one ?

    HI Xander,

Actually the best to repair motherboard is to use the POST card at least you will know which part of the IC that need to be replaced. In your case above, sorry i can't confirm if the northbridge ic have problem or not.

    HI Haitham,

Sorry i do not have book on motherboard repair. If you are just starting out in the repair field i suggest that you get the Testing Electronic Components ebook first( http://www.testingelectroniccomponenhts.com ). Once you are good in testing electronic components in fact you can start the repair work.

    Hi Jestine,

My SMPS displays proper SB voltage(+5v) but when i short the Green and Black Wire then all the output voltages are fluctuating but below their normal voltage. (Say +5v will fluctuate between 1v to 4v. Same goes for all other colors). Also then the SB voltage fluctuates. But when i remove the pin between green and black then SB voltage is back to normal(+5v) without fluctuation.

The filter caps display the reading of approx 280-290v when i checked it in power-on after shorting the green and black pin.

Can you please suggest where can the problem be?

    HI Alok,

Two things yo need to check:

    1) make sure you connect to a load (motherboard)

    2) check all the output filter caps in the power supply with esr meter.

    Hi Jestine

I have one panel PC P$ mother board. When I swith it on, there in no power, no fan rotation, nothing.

The +5 VSB is fine and I checked power supply shorting the Green and Black wire. The power supply outputs perfact voltages.

A small green LED on the Mother board lits, which I think shows the presence of the +5VSB.

I checked the pin 72 of Winbond 83627HG Controller, It must be low when I power on the pc, but it stays high. thats why the power supply not get on.

    What will be the cause.

Thanks and waiting for your reply.

    HI Shailesh,
Actually very hard to determine where the problem is without using the PC Post card. During my time I depends heavily on the PC post card because it could tells you which section is having problem. In your case, it could be any component from bad CPU till power supply. Having good 5 volt and other voltages does not mean the power good signal is good. Without power good signal the motherboard will not work.

    Hi,
I have TOSHIBA laptop and its working fine since 4 years. But one day suddenly power failure, i am unable to switched ON. Its completely dead. Even i have tried with removing battery and direct connect on power. All the things i have tried from my end. Then i have shown to one of the technician in Hyderabad(India), he shown me its power capacitor has gone. That is NEC/TOKIN capacitor damaged.
Please let me know how much toshiba service center will charge for this, i have handed over the laptop to the service station.

    Pls reply me....

I bought this book from Amazon for the Kindle.

Laptop Motherboard Fault Finder [Kindle Edition]
    Nkechi Emeka

    http://www.amazon.com/Laptop-Motherboard-Fault-Finder-ebook/dp/B005I7HM9M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332557238&sr=8-1

It is about 200 pages of what looks like questions and answers from a forum on Laptop motherboard repair. It does have some good info in it and anyone working on laptops would find this helpful because there are few sources of info available like this. It is written in broken English and there are not a lot of deeper explanations on the problems and solutions. It is only $9.95 and you can download it. The info is fairly current, maybe 2011. You can check out the some of the book for free on Amazon.

    Hi Jestine,
I am an IT technician with over 13 years of experience completing a wide variety of laptop and desktop repairs.  Our company is looking to get the proper equipment for doing component level testing on motherboards (laptops & desktops mainly).  From the research completed so far, it appears that we need  a high quality oscilloscope, Rework Station, SMB station ESR tester.  The rework/ reballing stations will be fairly easy to use with our experienced techs, however using a oscilloscope to complete the component level repairs / finding the problem part(s) will be difficult.  Do you have any books / materials that you would recommend for purchasing?  We are happy to pay for any ebooks etc. provided the material is of use to proceed with this.  Thank you for your time.
