Sparking Tube In Singer CRT TV

The complaint of this Singer CRT TV was no power. The customer told me that it was repaired by someone before and he can’t repaired it. Sometimes in our repair field , we have to repair the set that had been touched up before by some other repairers.

If those repairers have responsibility, they will put back everything but to some they will remove (steal) some of the components and this is not a good practice. If we can’t repair the set, just send it back to the customer. Ok, as usual the first thing to do is to remove the TV cover and clean all the dust. I detached some of the cables in order to remove the circuit board for checking.

The component to check is obviously is the fuse but the main fuse was not there. Perhaps it could have been removed by the previous repairer.

CHECK FUSE

The next step was to check on some of the major components in the power side and all seems to be good.

Since there were no bad components, so I connected a light bulb and test it out and hope I could know the problem.

Once the power was On, I heard a sound and it was actually came from the blue spark inside the picture tube-see the photo below:

I left no choice other than to call my customer to check if he wants to replace a second hand picture tube. I was surprised that he wanted to repair it.  I had to remove the tube in order to replace with another tube.

I found the replacement tube and once everything was connected I had to adjust the convergence so that the color patches will be gone and the colors lines will be aligned. It took me some times to do the adjustment and finally it was done.

Well done Suranga! The hard part always must be adjusting the HV to the new tube or at least check if the Line Frequence Regulated Tranformer HV Output is within spec to prevent X-rays. Those HV Probes are quite expensive but if I remember it well there has been a DIY project in the last 2 years in one of the Everyday Practical Electronics UK magazines. Such a Probe would be an ideal tool for these kind of CRT replacements.

    Hey Suranga

Good job! I have repaired many-many CRTs in the past having similar problems using my trusty “B/W- Color CRT analyzer/rejuvenator” from “LEADER”, a very famous in my country Japanese electronic instruments manufacturer during the last forty (at least) years.
Most of the CRT problems, like inter-electrode short-circuits (grid-to-cathode, cathode-to-filament, acceleration grid-to other electrodes etc) could be restored with the aid of this instrument. Moreover open electrodes could be welded as well (!!!) and color balance tests as well as low emission tests and rejuvenation in any color gun thereafter was also feasible, either in auto (timed) mode or manual (hand-timed) mode. And also the applied restoration voltage was either auto or manually selected…
Thank you for refreshing my memory!!

    Best Regards

Good work! If you have access to Modern Colour Television Circuits published by BPB Publications, Delhi, on the inside cover, you can see guidelines given for rejuvenating a CRT Tube and solving shorted CRTs.

    Hi Suranga
Thank you for your well explained article on CRT. Keep the good work up.
To Azis you touched on a very important topic on CRT analyser\rejuvenator. Is it difficult to use? How long does it take to rejuvenate a CRT and for how long can a rejuvenated CRT work and finally how much in USD does one CRT analyser\rejuvenator cost. Sorry to have troubled you with lots of questions but I have a lot of faulty CRTs at my workshop and I believe this gadget can help me revive some if not all of them
