Unsatisfactory Attempt To Restore Panel Problem In SONY LCD TV
This is a story of an unsatisfactory attempt to restore the panel of this Sony LCD TV. When the TV was brought to me with the complaint of intermittent on/off problems and lines in panel, my first action was to check the power supply and make it stable. As I noticed some of the capacitors are out of range both in ESR as well as capacitance, I went ahead and replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the power supply and mother boards.
Then the power supply became stable and the TV worked without any intermittent problems. After having done the first step, I focused on the panel problems and combed the T-Con board for any defective components or track cuts or burnt marks. Everything looked ok in the board.
As per suggestions received from my Techie friends, I removed one of the two cables that go to the panel, and found that side picture is missing. Then reconnected it and tried the other side, which showed half of the picture but with vertical lines on the top.
Removed the frame of the panel and kept it on top of two boxes in order for me to have a closer look at the Scaler Board.
Checked and found all voltages such as VGL/VGH/VDD/GSM/VCOM etc. were normal, indicating a problem with the panel. Cutting CKV tracks to the panel could solve the problems, according to the expert opinions of my techie friends. So, as per their advice, I cut the tracks one by one, but after cutting the fourth track, the picture was missing and the screen remained black. My attempts to rejoin the tracks were futile, as these are so tiny hair like tracks and we need microscope and screen for doing such work. So, I gave up and went for a new T-Con Board. This time, masking a few pins in the connector was attempted. But the lines though disappeared, reappeared again when I switched on the TV next day morning. So, the defects such as shorts inside the panel were slowly spreading and there was no way it could be restored. A panel change was the only fool-proof way.
Since the cost of a new panel, that too on a Sony HDTV, was prohibitive, the customer was not willing to go any farther and I had to return the set, without collecting anything from them. But the bitter experience taught me many things and that by itself is a gain! This time, the ‘satisfaction’ bag kept itself closed tightly and I let the ‘dissatisfaction’ go down on its course, leaving a lot of lessons in the process! Am I unhappy? Definitely not! Life is full of ups and downs and we need to have same thrill when it goes down too, because it is coming down to go up and going up to come down! (LOL)
I am providing a few more pictures below to give a conclusion to this article:

our gain is not just only in the income, yes we need income but in this case the gain is experience which is more valued than money but on the other side, the customer should have given you something for your trouble. I am sure you have spend a lot of time working on that TV.
good try..keep up the good work and have a blessed safe day my friend.

Yes, they tried persuading me to accept some amount, but I politely refused to take it. There is no satisfaction in any gratification, when the result of our attempt is futile. That will earn more credibility and better respect!

I was wondering, do you not charge a bench fee for your services? It will compensate you for your time and expertise in attempting a repair. Especially when you have invested more time in a repair than I’m sure you charge for.

The real compensation is earning a better regard and respect of a customer through our fair deals. This customer indeed offered, but I politely refused!

It shows that you didn't make it any worse seeing those beautiful Indian ladies appear on the LCD screen of this not entirely fixable Sony tv. Although the unwanted horizontal lines are still there this tv nevertheless does a fine job in showing adverts to Call them on AsiaNet.

Yes, it's not altogether bad, but these lines are very irritating when watched continuously.

Good effort and unquantify experience, rubbies can't buy is great gain. The ways you deal with your customers is what many techie will not want to do including myself. However I think I am learning from you.

Many thanks, dear! Keeping our poise irrespective of the result is a quality that we, technicians, should try to practice and take anything on our stride!

Do not dissapoint Parasuraman. By the way, I´m fan of the indian actress showed by you in the last pictures, she was the wife of Salman Khan, another good indian actor.

Many thanks! No disappointment at all! I am not familiar with cinema actors/actresses. Hence I may have to know it from you. But there is very little chance, as this is a local advertisement of a cable channel. She is unlikely to take part.
