Using 85 C Electrolytic Capacitor As Replacement

By on February 25, 2012

In certain equipment power supplies you will observe that most of the e-caps are rated as 105 Celcius. Could you use a 85 C e-cap as replacement? The answer can be subjective-why? If the power supply is fully covered with metal casing and hardly have any good ventilation the best is to use back the 105 C capacitor. If you use a 85 C as replacement the cap would not last long due to heat easily build up in the dense and compact area. If the power supply do not have metal casing just like the one found in some of the Epson dot matrix printers then yes we can use 85 C as replacement.

In certain situation where you could not locate the 105 C e-cap, you can infact put in a 85 C as replacement-but you need to do one thing. Use hair dryer on those 85 C e-caps  and see if there is any changes in the output voltages and if you are repairing display unit make sure there is no disturbance in the display when the e-cap is already hot. Please do not focus on the e-cap for too long otherwise it may melt the ecap sleeve and affect the corresponding components.
