Welding Machine Powers On But Does Not Weld Repaired. Model: Straus
A welding technician brought this welding machine for repair and the complaint was it comes one, the fan is running but it does not weld at all.
That is a bigger size welding machine and sad to say they do not make like these ones any more. Now there are all smaller in the size, cheaper and breaks fast. I powered on the machine and sure enough like what the customer said, I could hear the loud fan running but the relays did not click. The relays has to click otherwise the machine will not weld.
Two things I have in mind right now, either the relays are bad, or the relays are not getting the 24 volts to operate, let us find out what is causing this issue.
The first thing I checking for voltages on the three relays in this machine and guess what? They were not getting any power there which an indicator the line is bad or the main brain that sends out the 24 is not doing its job.
Look what I found, someone has been in this machine and replaced an SMD resistor that is supposed to be 1.5 with 1 ohm resistor.
The replacement is fine but why did the resistor was replaced? It is very clear that after the resistor was replaced the machine is still did not weld indicating there are more faults in it.
Just below that line of that replaced resistor I found a 220 SMD resistor that was open.
I soldered a new resistor there and checked for more faults in that machine but found none.
I found an IC that looked damaged but when took it off board cleaned but it seemed fine so I put it back on board.
I tested the machine through a current limiter and guess what? It came on but the fan in the middle of this welding machine did not sound good at all and needs some attention.
The customer did not want replace it as long it is running because he does not mind the loud sound coming out of it. So I sprayed some fan lubrication and sounded much better but replacement was recommended.
Mission Accomplished.

It was a good thing that this quality designed welder found your repair store right after it was improperly fixed by a previous engineer. Or else it could have been dumped by its owner for the wrong reasons!

Albert: it happens alot in our area where they are looking for cheap fix and when it comes to good quality repair they are not willing to pay for that and end up paying more because two techinicans checked them out and one was able to repair it. it is a sad situation but oh well, life goes on. have a blessed day

I HATE servicing items that someone else had already messed with them before.
It sounds like trouble is coming!

Paul: I know the feeling my friend. that is why I started to charge estimate fees in case there was alot of damage on board. have a blessed day

I wonder how you got to know the value of smd resistor 1.5 since it has been removed before appliance got to your work shop. Thanks for sharing.

Imoudu: that is a very good question. since I deal with a lot of welding machines boards from experience i should know that. If I do not have any knowledge of any board I ask around, try to find schematics on online and find a way to get it up and running. have a blessed day
