PHILIPS home theatre system repair

Customer sent to me this Philips DVD Home theater system with the complaint of Standby problem. First, you can turn on the power but after that it will revert to standby.

From experience, it may be the problem of bad mainboard or the Main amp fault. I had to removed the cover to show you the boards inside this DVD. See the photos below:

PHILIPS main amp board repair

In order to know if the Main amp fault or not, i had to pull out the cables connected to this board and power On-see the photo below:

fix dvd home theatre system

Once the cables had been pulled out and power On, the DVD now runs normally but without sound (because I had disconnected the Main amplifier board).

PHILIP amp repair

Next, I had to remove this circuit board and perform troubleshooting.

how to repair main amp

I suspected the amplifier IC fault(TAS5142) because shorted IC will usually cause Stand by problem.

Below if the TAS5142 IC datasheet:

I soldered out all the three amplifier ICs as seen from the photo below:

I went to Ebay online to buy the parts and put them in and power On. The DVD now can work normally without shutting down (No more standby problem). See all the photos below:

Pro job Mr. Suranga! Nice to see that it was a PHILIPS device (Royal Philips Electronics, a company in my country headquartered in Amsterdam) although the DVD player was defect. Since Philips stopped making consumer electronics and concentrated on their Lighting and Healthcare divisions, Philips consumer electronics will become rare. Now Philips is a main player in growing food from plants even in winter months before they normally would grow outside in the fields. And by changing the Led color of the lamps all sorts of fruits and vegetables grow very fast months before would be normal. http://www.lighting.philips.com/main/products/horticulture
Something I think is really incredible and will benefit all of humanity!

Like you I worked before at Philips division Medical Systems near Eindhoven Suranga. There we didn't repair however, which would have made the job probably more interesting, but only manufactured Diagnostic X-ray camera's, power units, high voltage generators etc.etc. I worked there from 1995 upto 2002 until my project sadly stopped after an internal restructuring. That job and another one were the only good jobs I didn't quit out of a total of about 13 other jobs through temporary employment agencies. (some jobs were really unhealthy, asbestos, glue, tar, non-stick spray, smoke, detergents, glas wool etc.).

This type of soldering work really need high patience level and practice for soldering ; because little bit higher temperature of soldering iron and you lost the trace because of over heating.

    Congratulations! suranga.

    Well done Suranga!
Those pesky IC's are difficult to solder in place. I'm grateful I can use my digital microscope - my eyes aren't what they used to be.
I have 2 LCD TV's that are stuck in standby mode I have purchased the IC's to replace them - I just have to find the time to do it!

It is interesting, but a bit too quick.
It would be good to explain what exactly led you to the decision to replace those 44-pin IC's, all 3 of them. Where were they shorted?
I also think that it would be very beneficial to many on this blog if you could show in more details the method and technique of the chips removal, cleaning and preparing the area, and then soldering back the new IC's.
Many of us learn from these articles. Let's make it more clearer and more explanatory.

      Hi Henry,
Have you tried watching YouTube videos? There are plenty of videos that show that. But they also use easy IC's that don't have adhesive under them. I never see any articles or videos on YouTube that show the replacement of glued down IC's that I seem to almost always see. But at least they show how to replace the easy ones...

What tool did you use to di-solder and re-solder the ICs? Did you use a normal soldering iron? Please, specify because I have a similar job involving these type of ICs with many and small legs.
    Regards,
    Mark.

Good job, Suranga. Man, you guys are lucky! Here in the USA, nearly every time I need to replace an IC like that it is glued down with some kind of adhesive to the PCB and almost impossible to remove without damaging the PCB.

I have a old Philips DVD Home Theater Model HTS6600/37. It has a similar amp A796-PCB-003. Im have low sound output. volume at max is about talking level. I don't see any obvious bad capacitors, from anyones experience would the TAS5142 IC cause low volume issue? and positive I will not be able to make those solder connections with my solder gun.
