DVR REPAIR

A guy works in a TV station near buy brought me this car DVR for repair and said that it does not power up due to the fact that the main power port is ripped off board. He said that he took it to another tech guy but he did not know how to get to the ripped charging/power port to get it fixed.

I could see the preying marks on the body of the camera and no wonder why the tech could not open it because he is working on it the wrong way.

There was a thin plastic piece covering these four screw holes and once that plastic was removed I was able to get inside this camera

and hopefully I will be getting it fixed because I do not have this kind of power port in my shop.

Step by step I was able to get to the power port and as expected; take a look

fixing dvr

First problem I encountered; too many pads ripped off the board and it is not impossible to do but it would take lots of work to restore and it would be expensive to repair.

This charging port was found inside the device and as seen, it is damaged and need replacement.

The other problem like I said before I do not have this kind of port in my shop and it would take time to get here if I order it online.

I called the customer about a different repair option which is taking the main battery out and providing continues power externally through a power source inside the car. It runs on 5 DC volts and this could be provided through a phone charger using the cigarette lighter socket.

As seen in the previous photo, I connected the camera to an external power in my shop and it powered on just fine.

Soldered thin black and red wires to the input of the battery and extended them to the outside of the device as seen in the photo. It worked just fine.

I called the customer for pick up and he was happy with the outcome. He said that it will talk to car electrician to install it in his car but I told him there is no need for that and I gave him a cell phone charger that connects directly to the cigarette lighter socket and it worked just fine.

Sometime we have to think outside the box and in this case the idea worked just fine and to that I could say

Mission Accomplished.

    Well played Waleed.
I have used the USB-A end of a charging cable (while soldering the other cut ends to the device) to achieve the same results. All they need to do is plug it into any USB port and they get instant 5v power.

    Good Job! Waleed
I seen now a days many manufacturers providing micro USB Power connector like in this type of small gadgets because of easy availability of power sources but this is total non reliable power connector and sometime it can damage whole device by ripped traces on the PCB.

    Good fix!
It is a bit odd that most car devices now run on in our homes available USB 5V voltages instead of using the provided 12V of the car battery.
