External Universal PWM Switching STR Power Module

While we repair SMPS sometime we don’t find any reference or unavailability of PWM IC , Switching Mosfet .Sometime marking code are also missing from the parts because of burnout  or the manufacturer removed marking intentionally.

In this situation it is difficult to repair the SMPS. For this type of repair some external switching modules are available in the market, sharing here one of the module model DS-0088 installation process. Basic switching of SMPS is same so this installation process is applicable to all the SMPS same way.

Different modules having different color code & numbers of wires some module have 3 wires some module 4 wires so do not trust on any wire color code as standard. Mostly modules come with installation diagram so please refer it carefully.

Note: Before Installation of this types of module, Remove PWM IC, Switching MOSFET / Transistor & make it sure that there is no any other shoring on the primary side of the SMPS circuit by cold testing after removing above components. The module looks like the one below:

universal power module ca-888

On final fitting make sure to install it in original heat sink position & pay attention to proper  insulation while installing the module.

Sharing the connection diagram so that the wiring can be understood easily.

Red Cross is either component removed or trace cut.

how to install universal power module

Before turning ON the SMPS, power the SMPS through Series Test Bulb Board.

Sometime modules do not work because of different current required as per the SMPS design by the manufacturer, so confirm with the supplier for what purpose you are buying the module.

      Very well illustrated.
I cannot use these because the voltage in my are is 120Vac and so I don't get the B+ boost 330Vdc across the Main filter capacitor. Thanks.

This module should work in SMPS Switching because it works on reference input voltage.

Thanks Yogesh for this very clear explaining on how to use these 5 wire power modules!
I know that dear Parasuraman uses them in many of his repairs but I never have had the experience to use these universal modules successfully in any of mine yet. Also because none of my repairs could be fixed with them, mostly because transformers or other necessary parts were defect and needed replacement too.

      Albert,
These modules are very useful when you can't find replacement parts for SMPS switching.I was also inspired by Parasuraman Sir to try this module.

      Muykit,
I think 3 wire module is bigger in size ,If size does not matter it will work.

Yogesh, this article has come at a right time. Since these modules come with different number of wires, it is very difficult for some of us to know where to place the required wire. With your article, our eyes have been open. Here in Africa these modules are available in our markets and are being used. Thanks for sharing.
