Repair Of 32″ LED Tv With Audio, No Video
This tv was brought by a new customer who got hint about me, with complaints of tv panel went blank while children were playing game with it and there was audio, but no pictures.
My first thought was, it could be backlight issue, having done primary dusting, I focus attention on backlight area, check e-caps on board…..no problem, then turned attention on t- con board,check input voltage 12V…. correct and stable, check on other voltages like….vgh, vgl, vdd,vcc etc, no voltages at these voltage points.

My attention now turned to panel, probably its the cause of problem,removed the two flexes and retest for voltages…no voltages, that rules out panel has cause of problem, so suspicion turned back to t- con, check on dc to dc ic, having downloaded its datasheet and study it, I decided to inspect all components around it.
When I got to the marked smd cap and the other two caps after the resistor, those three caps sound shorted, since the marked one sounded louder, I decided to desolder it out and recheck, and alas it was really shorted, then tested the other two on board…there was no more short on them.
So I did sort for replacement from a scrab board and soldered back the replacement and switch ON tv….
Wow picture show on panel, but alas my Wow was cut short for a while……see what acrobatic pictures that panel passed through before finally rested on final better picture.
Then connect to tv a dvd player and see what picture looks like,
So I did call attention of customer to this abnormality of his tv and in affirmative tone he answered ” this’s the way I have been using it for long” Do I have any other thing to say? then this is the finished repair work.

shorted capse can do this kind of damage on any electornic boards and sometimes to find such shorted caps the best to use a thermal camera which will speed up the repair process. good job on finding these shorted caps without a thermal camera. have a blessed day

Reading the comments about easily finding bad ecaps with a Thermal camera is new to me. But that of course only works when the board under test still can be powered on and viewed at the same time! I will try that next time I have to fix bad old ecaps on complex circuits.

Thermal camera is a very useful device for fault finding commonly used for mobile phone repair, when circuit is powered,it will pin point exact part & Location which is over heating because of Shorting or leakage.

Its so nice a lesson, Imoudu. It will even be a bigger lesson if the querry about how an electronics repairer finds out about SMD capacitor specifications. Imoudu, I too have benefited immensely from our electronics repairers on this Jestine Yong blog, just in one year. Their generousity is immeasurable. I pray that God blesses them all. Please lets soldier on despite lack of some equipment.

There's no known way one can know the value of shorted cap, except comparison with same from same scrap board,however in my case I normally use cap of the same size and color from any scrap t-con,this rule is not authentic, it's mere luck.
