Shorted Turn Tester
By Jestine Yong on December 17, 2007
While surfing the internet to look for flyback tester i stumbled upon this website that sell the shorted turn instrument. This tester is designed to test motor winding and I wonder whether it can be use to test windings in the Monitor or TV like the smps transformer, b+ coil, yoke coils and the flyback primary winding coils. Please check out the spec from the website. By the way i have solved my computer problem, it was the browser problem (i’m using internet explorer 7). After installing the mozilla firefox, it work perfectly okay.

The shorted turns tester you show on your website is too complex.
I had a tester 20 years ago that was no bigger than a matchbox and tested all transformers and coils in a TV set. It had 2 leads and a current meter. If the meter worked the coil was OK.

Hi Ronald,
For testing normal coils in consumer electronics, a decent coil tester is adequate (like the Blue Ring Tester). But for testing motor winding and some other bigger coils then a more powerful tester is needed.

Hi again Jestine,
I have turned my attention to the subject of "ring" testing low frequency and other transformers and inductors. I have found that it is perfectly practical. Right now I'm building a prototype. It won't have just 8 LEDs in a bargraph but two 7-segment displays to show up to 99 rings, which some very good inductors can produce. If it works OK, I will make a video on YouTube and tell you where to see it. Cheers, Bob

Hi Bob,
That was a good idea! Reading the 7 segment displays is much easier. Ok will wait for the video.
Thanks.
