A LG Smart TV Remote Control Repaired

This was brought to my shop for repair. It was working fine but even it was replaced with new batteries, it lasts for only a few hours and then shuts down and also mentioned that the batteries become very hot when installed in the remote.

It is clean and nice on the outside but when I tried to put some batteries in

there and check it out, I saw the big surprise….

It was nasty and it seems like batteries exploded in there but the problem was not just on that side; check the other side

Since it was working fine but the batteries become hot issue I decided to give it a clean and hope for the best.

fixing remote control

I cleaned the whole remote control with IPA and then gave it a try. It was working fine still but the batteries were getting really hot. It seems there was a short somewhere on the lower side of the remote.

I took my multi meter out set to diode mode and started checking for shorts. It did not take long search because I found the short right away. It was a bypass SMD capacitor that was getting really hot when installing the batteries. Once I removed it from the board, the batteries were ok and it was working for a long period of time.  Since it was working fine and it was only a bypass capacitor, I did not bother to replace it with a new one. I re soldered all the parts there and called it a successful repair.

Mission Accomplished.

Yes these things happen quite often to these smd type of capacitors. Also in laptops causing shorting currents that even prevent the computer to start at boot up.

Albert: yes totally agree. I find these smd capacitors faulty in many devices causing the device not to start. they are called by pass capacitors and I do not have to replace the device most of the time works without them. have a good day

Good Job Waleed: the diode check function can find several problems, not just check diodes.

Thank you for this! I never knew about testing for shorts using the diode mode. A quick search and I am a bit more enlightened.

Well done, and thanks for sharing! I was surprised there was a bypass cap in a battery operated remote... I wouldn't think there would be a need for one. Thanks for the time you put into the article.

Nice work, I have a problem, somehow while oppening the remote to clean the keyboard the U5 IC broke, it is missing. The controller is not working, I assume this is due the U5 missing. Can you give us the code of this IC? Thanks!
