PS4 REPAIR

A guy called me on the phone and asked me if I repair PS4 that has no display. We talked for a while on the phone to understand the nature of the fault. The guy said something about connecting the PS4 to the TV and getting a message “Invalid Format”.  With this kind of fault, either, bad HDMI cable, Bad HDMI port on the TV, the setting of the display in the menu of the PS4 was changed to different format or the HDMI port on the PS4 itself is bad and need replacement.

He brought the PS4 to my shop for checkup and I tried to hock it up to my TV and was getting no display whatsover. I used my HDMI cable that I know for sure is a good one but still no display.

I put the HDMI port of the PS4 under the microscope and to my surprise, the pins where burnt and needed replacment. It was time to take the PS4 apart and replace the HDMI port inside.

This is what I saw when I took the cover off. Some dust here and there but nothing major.

I took the other cover of as well and to my surprise it was very clean so I countinued with the dismental process.

I disconnected the power supply first then continued with the dismentalling of the device.

I was getting closer to the HDMI port but first I have to disconnect all the rippen cables off this board and the fan connecter as well.

Finally I got to the HDMI and if you look closely it looked nice and clean on the outside but on the inside was a different story.

I checked it under the microscope and all the pins were intact but it was time to de solder that port of the board and replace it with a new one.

hdmi port replaced in ps4

As always, I added a low melt solder to the legs and the pins of the HDMI port and applied some heat to it and it not time the port was out.

I cleaned the area and soon enough the area was ready to receive a new HDMI port.

I could not get a clear shot of the faulty port but if you look where the arrow is, that is the area where the port was melting on the inside and that is an eough reason to replace it with a new one.

I have plenty of HDMI ports in the shop. so I replace it with a new one. I made sure the pins and the legs of the port are soldered solid and clean. Sorry I forgot to take a photo of that since I was distracted with a lot of phone calls and customers walking into the shop but if you check the next photo you would see the final result.

Of course I cleaned the main chip of the old dry thermal paste and added fresh paste to it. Cleaned the fan and made sure everything is nice and clean and I gave it to the testing expert (my son) who was helping me in the shop. According to my son the PS4 is up and runing the way it should be.

Mission Accomplished.

I suppose low melting solder is good to have and use.
Although I myself until now never needed it to solder on or off any connector yet. But maybe I should order some low melting solder in case I do need it in the nearby future. If the price is right. Thanks for sharing.

Albert: yes low melt solder is a good thing to have but be careful there is a lot of bad low melt solder out there. There is also a low melt paste and it is good as well. Have a blessed day

    I've done this repair myself.
I use regular leaded solder to help desolder the port.
    Works just fine.

Tayo: sure you could do that but if you have sensitive components around that part you will ruin them by exposing them to a lot of heat. Low melt solder is the best way to go. Have a blessed day

      Imoudu:
yes the low melt solder is needed all the time if you deal with sensitive components around the soldering area. we as tech's trying to avoid smoking parts on any borad. have a blessed day
