This lovely 22” LCD backlight TV was picked up by me during my visit to one of my techie friend’s inauguration ceremony of Panel Bonding workshop. It was in perfect working condition and the picture was too good to believe! Another techie friend who stays around 70 Kms away from my home, came and picked me up to avoid me driving my car and going to the inaugural place alone, which was around 120 Kms away. Just see the kind of love and concern my techie friends have for me!

As you might have already noticed, the polarizer film had already come out in all four sides. My friend, RKR suggested on our return journey that he would teach me a new technic for replacement of polarizer films. The usual practice is to remove the old film, scrape off the gum and clean the surface and fix a new sheet on top ensuring that there were no air bubbles. The process of sticking a new film requires experience, patience and precision and might take longer time, if air bubbles form, requiring peeling off and re-sticking. We all know that a panel is made of two very thin glass sheets and stuck together with the Liquid Crystals and circuitry in the middle, connections of which are joined through COF bonding. The method used by my friend was using a sharp shaving blade and cut into between these two glass sheets and separate them. He showed me how to do it when he came home to drop me back. He made incisions into the glue that bonds the two glass sheets by gently cutting in between at all the four sides little by little with adequate pressure ensuring that the glass did not break. After gaining entry into one corner, he ran the blade on all four sides to release the bond. He repeated that a few times, upon which the liquid started leaking out. He did it so quickly that I could not believe my eyes when he blew air through these incisions into the panel to peel it off! Let us have a look at the separated glass sheets and the perspiration of LCD on one side of the glass:

The tinted glass you see on the left side in the first picture above is the rear glass, which has several embedded components. The one on the right (dark color) which has an undamaged polarizer stuck on top is the one to be used in place of a polarizer film. He showed me how to scrape off the black coating on it by just using the shaving blade, which I have marked with an arrow. Then he left asking me to complete the scraping leisurely and try keeping the sheet on top of the TV to check whether it served the purpose. With lack of experience and being the first time, I really struggled to scrape the dark stuff off the glass. When I was half way through, may be due to excess pressure applied, the glass developed crack in the middle, but did not come off due to the polarizer sheet on the other side. Anyhow, I finished the job and kept the glass on top of the TV, after switching it on and noticed that the sheet was not letting through if kept on top, but showed correctly when tilted. So, the glass could not be used for sure. When I reported this to my friend, he told me that one factor was overlooked. The LCD TV was HD ready set, whereas the panel split open was Full Hd.

According to him, that could make a mismatch of the angle of degree. So, he promised to make one ready for me at his end and bring it during his next visit which was scheduled in the next week. But unfortunately the work for which he was planning another trip got postponed and I was stuck with the incomplete TV at my end. Then I decided to make a trip to his house with a load of pending TVs so that we two and perhaps one more techie friend staying close by to RKR to render a helping hand can finish and I can learn a lot from these well experienced duos. It was a mini technician’s get together for interactive learning! You can see my car loaded with TVS:

I left at around 6.30 AM and reached the meeting point, which was a vegetarian restaurant at his place, where we had our breakfast together to start the day with enough fuel filled in our tanks! Then went to RKR’s home, which was a TV haven rather than a house. His outhouse was full of TVs both in the ground and first floors, where I could not even put my step in to take a snap! Hundreds of TVs were scattered in the sit out, receiving room, lunch room and another bedroom. As his wife and son go out for work, the entire house was used by him for his service! I took a video and sent it to my wife as she used to always scold me for converting the house similarly though in a very small way! The lunch table was converted as service table for starting our work. The polarizer glass required for this TV was already made ready by RKR. In fact, he had made ready three of 22” panels and tried one by one and found two having same problems but one was found perfectly matching. Then he opened the TV to find tons of cobwebs and filthy dust:

We two did a thorough cleaning of the TV keeping it in the open Veranda. Then he cleaned the surface within no time.

(The polarizer sheet was already removed by me at my home for checking suitability of the panel) Another friend, in the meantime started work on the 49” TV that I had carried with me. It was very interesting and delightful to watch these two well experienced technicians work with such a pace and ease and I murmured within myself that the kind of work they handled within minutes would have taken me hours together. They were very brisk and thorough step by step and did know what to do next at each stage. Then RKR friend dismantled the TV to take the panel out to insert the panel glass in the front and fit the frame. All these works were done like a robot machine! He just kept the add-on panel glass on top of the original panel of the TV and fixed the frame and assembled the TV back. There was no need to glue it on. Now look at the performance of self-demo pictures available in this TV. The TV has also an FM Radio!

I returned home by 6.30PM after covering a total distance of 168KM which included visit to nearby dam, garden and hill temple (with the other two technicians). This drive instilled confidence in me! I allowed the TV to run for several hours putting the Sherlock Holmes movies and found it to be working very well. This is a service, in which no board level repair was undertaken and sheer replacement of the polarizer film with this glass served the purpose! Mission accomplished with vigor, enthusiasm and excitement adding satisfaction coated with these to the collection bag!

PS: The concern and love for each other was proved yet again by providing us two with sumptuous vegetarian lunch which was prepared by RKR and his wife exclusively for my sake. They also gave me a gift bottle of coconut oil made in the factory where his wife was working. She had left for her work only after serving tea and snacks!

I'm glad that you survived this long trip and carrying all those devices in your car and am happy for the nice techie friends you mentioned dear Parasuraman!
Sadly the article did not help me to understand how or what exactly was replaced, repaired or fixed?
Because all I understood was that liquid started leaking out and glass developed a crack in the middle.
Which to me is a clear sign it was going wrong badly!

Excellent repair Parasuraman. However, the repair article is so complex to those who don't understand about the polarizer
