About PC ATX Power Supplies Repair

By on June 14, 2012

Just to check do you all still repair the common type PC ATX power supplies?  My side here no longer repairing it perhaps the cost of the new one is cheap that's why many customer opt to get a new one instead of repairing it.  I just want to know if your side there still repair this type of power supplies?  Thanks in Advance.

not any more. in my country, The ATX power supply cost about 10 dollars. nobody bother to get them fixed. they usually buy new ones.
i collect them and sell them to the Junk collector and get paid for them.

      Hi Waleed,

You are right the price here is about that too. Unless if it is a branded PC power supply where the normal type can't fit into the casing. In this type of power supply, usually customer will fix it.

    Hi Jestine,

Standard computer ATX power supplies, no, it is not worth it anymore.

But for systems that take non standard power supplies and replacement is hard to get or very expensive (example HP and Dell), yes, still repair these, especially older machines that run specialised software or control specialised hardware where replacing the whole computer given today's very low PC prices is not really an option since hardware or software compatibility may be a problem.

    Philip.

      Hi Darkmen,

Yes you are right those components are in low quality but customer doesn't care. As long as if it can run for more than a year the customer can always buy a new one. Do you mean you still repair the cheap ATX power supplies? The cost of the components sometimes very expensive.

wael   fathe from libya   in my country    it is  about 10  dollars   what i do  is to see  if the  power  supply is  looks new  then  i would try to open it  and  see if  only  fuse or some   simple shorts  happen in   swiching   transistors or diodes or  bad connection   or  shorted diode  or  one  bulged caps then i will  fix it  .

but if  there  is  heavy short   that probably   hit the  bridge  the switching transistor   and many other  components    or  the   atx looks  old   (obvious  from the   dust  accumlated over the fan  )  then i will not   fix it

but any way    if i have  new  power  supply  in  my hand  i will immediately   put it  and toss the   defective one    but some  times  there is no  power supply  in hand   so  we  must  hear our soldering iron and do the  job

I only repair custom PSUs and expensive branded PSUs. Not worth repairing el-cheapo PSUs (replacing them with new unit would much cheaper, faster and less problems) unless I get them free. Even then I often put them aside (cold storage) and only work on them when I have lots of spare time and nothing else to do.

      Hi Alex,

You are right about the cheap ATX power supplies. Sometimes if you could just open up and repair the cheap one you may gain more power supply repair knowledge but again it also depends on the time you will spend on it. To hobbyist no problem but to professional repairer time is money.
