A computer technician who owns a store nearby brought me this alarm system device for repair. The device was giving out faulty panel readings and the sound usually comes on for now reason. It was a noisy.

It was not a very simple board to handle but the fault repair was. I powered the device in my shop and soon enough the whole area was disturbed with the loud sound that was coming out of this faulty device.

From experience, on a board like that usually there is a common failure in some of the components and these are the relays; an arrow shows the suspect but…

The customer said he checked and tested the board and found these two yellow to be faulty so he replaced them with brand new ones. So that throw me off there for a while because that was my main suspicious area but since he replaced these two relays and still not working it was clear to me that there was other things faulty in this device.

I checked this board inside out and found nothing wrong with it. What could be the fault here? I was confused for a while and then…

The customer was telling me he replaced these relay with new ones but I found out that this was fault. Does that look new to you? There is a melting pin there.

I called the customer and explained the situation and he was really disturbed about it. I asked him to bring me the old ones he took off board and he said he already threw them in trash. I think he assumed somehow he replaced them but he did not. I do not know what happened but that faulty information cost me lots of wasted time spent on this board.

I could not find a replacement available and since this device is urgently needed I could not order it on line because it is going to take a long time to get here.

I found exactly the same type of relay but bigger size so I have to do a certain modification to solve the issue.

It is 24 volts and I had to connect wires to make this work and it actually did. The customer came and tested it out and it was working fine.

I was not able to take a photo of the result but everything seems to be working just fine when the customer took it back to his shop and tested it further.

Mission Accomplished.

Sad that you could not provide pictures of modifications made and the final fitting, to know how you did it. People like us learn from such shares of vital information. Anyhow thanks!

Parasuraman: yes indeed, sorry about that but the idea was to glue the relay flat face down then soldering wires from the board to the pins of the relay according to the schematics I provided. thanks for your comments and have a blessed day

A customer that does his own repair without really knowing how to test his device or its components often means trouble. Even throwing away defect relays is not a smart thing to do because even the relay coils with the many thin layers of wire can be re-used for other repairs. Like for fixing broken copper tracks or making new hand-wired prototype boards.

I always say, the customer can be your best friend or your worst enemy. They can provide valuable information to help with your diagnostic path or fail to tell you the 'repairs' that they or others have done and totally throw you off a logical direction.

Mark: yes in a way I agree but what I do usually is listen to the customer and draw my own conclusion about the repair. I never let the customer's comments dictates me to what direction to go but I totally understand what you mean. have a blessed day
