An Emergency Light Powers On But Lights Do Not
A Pastor and a friend of mine brought two things for repair: one is a big TV with a broken panel and an emergency light that lights do not come on. The TV with a broken panel was not repaired due to the fact that the panel is hard to find and when found, it is usually expensive and the customer does not want to spend a lot of money on it. The customer asked me to keep the TV and in return, I will fix his emergency light; I agreed.
When I power up the set, the charging light comes on but when unplugging it, the lights do not come on and that is an indication of a either a bad battery or power not reaching the battery to charge. Let us find out.
I took the battery out and gave it a shake and right away I could hear something shaking inside the battery which is an indication of a dry battery and required a replacement.
I also did a voltage checking on it and as you can see, the reading is too low for battery to operate.
With battery not connected, I powered up the device and checked the voltage at the two wires negative and positive to make sure the battery was getting reading there and yes it was which is more confirmation that the battery is bad.
So we know by now that the battery is bad but would the LED lights come on before I go ahead and buy and install the new battery in? I connected the two wires to my home made power supply and set it to 6 volts and right away, the lights came on which is an indication to replace the battery and call it a fix.
I went to electronics store about twenty minutes away from my shop and purchased a battery and it was very cheap but the main problem is the new battery; a little bit longer than the original one.
Lucky I, the battery length was perfect to fit in the space inside the emergency light.
I soldered the new battery in place and gave it a try and as you can see it is up and running. I called the customer to come and pick up his device.
Now it is time to take the TV with the broken panel apart and salvage all the parts in there especially the LED lights strips in there because I have the same TV in my shop that needed a new or used set of LED light strips.
Mission Accomplished.

Having an electronic store nearby your shop must be a real blessing, not also having to have those battery packs in stock. Since you already have so many parts in stock anyway. I sure could use a sealed lead-acid 12V battery too for saving some of the free solar energy the solarpanel on my balcony collects!

Excellent service, Waleed. It added to my knowledge too much. The charging light on does not necessarily indicates charging. It simply says that the device has AC voltage in its input. It´s strange to hear something shaking inside the battery. We are talking about a gel battery, so this is not normal. As can be seen, it´s a 6 V battery, very common in the market. As I´d reported in my previous maintenance report, some devices use a 4 V battery, as is the case of practically every products sold here in my country, Brazil. Such a battery can´t be found, is a real "white fly". It was a good idea to check LED panel operation using your bench power supply. A final comment is about the sizes of the two batteries. The old one has a 2.8 Ah capacity and the new one has a 4 Ah capacity, 45% higher, but the physical size does not accompany. Perhaps it is not really 4 Ah.
