How can we test IC using a multimeter ?

Multimeter can only be used to test the IC dc supply voltage and to use the ohm range to find out if the IC is shorted to ground or not. Generally using an oscilloscope to test an IC is much more accurate because one could see the input and the output signal assuming if  the IC did not develop any short circuit and has the right DC SUPPLY input (VCC).

One also have to know that not all IC has input signal. Take oscillator IC like the common power IC found in switch mode power supply (UC3842) as an example. This type of IC produce it owns output waveform once the dc supply is present. This means it does not need an external input signal in order to produce the output signal.

Beside this, there are Microcontroller Unit (MCU), PIC, EEprom, FLASH Rom, Ram  IC which require a specialize tester like programmer and Ram tester in order to check if they are good or bad.

Conclusion- One has to know what type of IC they are having then only use the right test equipment to check on the ICs.

How can using a multimeter to test IC L6384D .thanks

    • Jestine Yong

      November 12, 2016 at 10:17 am

      HI Abbas,

The multimeter can only check the dc supply voltage pin. Pin 5 and 7 you need a scope to check on its waveform.

I want you to help me on how to check ic if is working or not

    • Jestine Yong

      September 23, 2017 at 3:49 pm

      Hi Ayodele,

It depends on what type of IC you want to check. For normal linear IC just measure the input and output IC pins waveform using oscilloscope. Other types of IC you need special Type of IC tester to test it

pls sir, i will like to how read ic to detect if it's bad and also how to identify ic component if it's power or charging ic on laptop motherboard.

    • Jestine Yong

      November 2, 2017 at 10:08 am

      HI EmmyG,

The answer is already in the written post. To identify the type of IC just go to Google and type in the IC part number. From there you will know if it is a power IC or charging IC or other type of IC.

Have been working on a Tandberg 9000x tape deck and consider my self to be a newbie. Have replaced all caps ( except the three large ones which control the motors), transistors,a few resistors, transformer, all diodes and still have the same issues....the motors operate manually, no lights on the mode controls ( replaced the lamps ), none of the mode switches respond. Have not replaced any of the IC's, have checked with a DMM and all appears to have values between 500 and 700, but suspect this may be my issue. This unit has been owned by me since 1973. Any thoughts?

    Thank you.

    • Jestine Yong

      June 18, 2019 at 9:55 pm

      Hi William,

I suggest that you direct replace the ICs as checking ICs with DMM is not accurate. The best is to direct replace and retest.
