printer giving blank pages

Model: CANON LBP 2900 Laser printer

Fault Symptom: Feeding blank sheets continuously and some time getting Paper Jam Error on Computer screen with paper sucking inside the printer.

Received CANON LBP 2900 Laser printer in my workshop for above said fault symptom for repair. As per symptom the probable culprit area is Paper Pick up assembly. I have removed the cartridge for visual inspection because some time you can find ball pen, refills paper clips, eraser rubber band and so on in paper pickup assembly (Mishandling by user and if this is for home use then it sure this creative work done by children’s).

But as I have inspected from toner cartridge location I did not found any suspicious things as stated above. Hence I have decided to dismantle the printer.

 getting blank pages while printing

First of all I have removed paper pickup pad unit and cleaned the Area with IP.

paper pick up rubber

As per stated the fault symptom, the meaning that it will just keep throwing out blank sheets without stopping the Gear after single page printout command. So this part is handling by Solenoid Unit which gets signal from logic board and it decides where to stop the paper pickup gear after the printing.

So I have removed solenoid unit from the Printer for further inspection. printer solenoid

On removal by visual inspecting the solenoid unit I found some sticky grease like substance is there on Solenoid clutch plate.

 printer solenoid problem

So cleaned the surface with wet cotton cloth with IP. So here is the Culprit for above said fault symptom. Solenoids are used to control the timing of the paper feeding.

Just clean the solenoid with IP reassemble everything back and tested by giving print commands from my setup , it works fine without paper jam and not feeding blank sheets continuously.

Very good, Mr. Yogesh Panchal. Another tip of knowledge. Just a doubt: what is IP? (I know this monogram as Internet Protocol and Ingress Protection, to quote only technology-related terms).

Thanks. The sticky relay is also a problem with many HP printers which use the same relay.

Good Fix Yogesh! Restoring the faults in the non-electronics cases like these mechanicle constructions are often harder to solve. Disassembling any printer can be most annoying before it can be examined or even cleaned. I never heard about using IP solvant before though. You did mention it several times in your article as if it was plain ordinary Isopropyl alcohol, but I take it that it wasn't?

In fact that is a small piece of sponge is used to reduce the clicking noise of the solenoid.
I dont know why it degenerates, some times the solenoid arm remains attached and causes paper jam.
A small piece of sponge couldn't they find something
more decent to do the job?

Here I have used short form "IP" is for " Isopropyl Alcohol " Liquid often used for cleaning electronic gadgets . Isopropyl Alcohol a great choice for cleaning various surfaces, due to their effective cleaning and disinfecting properties, and fast drying rates.commonly used for cleaning PCB / Electric contacts / switches , even you can use it for cleaning TV / Monitor and Mobile Screen ; it removes oil / grease like sticky substances you can clean flux which reside after soldering also. some time it removes ink of permanent marker also.

Useful Information. I have a question for Mr Yogesh - When printed on Canon 2900, the middle portion does not get fixed. Fuser, Heating Element has already been replaced. What will be the problem ?

    Mr. Tambe,

Try with another working Toner Cartridge if not fixed the probable culprit area is Fuser assembly or Scanner assembly.

It is very nice of you for presenting this with great clarity. I do have a different issue. The printer is fine. But when I am using A4 paper cut to half size, it takes almost 15 seconds to load each page. The normal A4 do not take that much time to load and print. This takes more than double time if I want to print say 50 pages etc. I use this to make small booklets on poojas etc for distribution among a small gathering of devotees. What could be the problem? can you help

Very helpful article. My printer (same mode) throws blank paper and it does not print. However, the same toner cartridge works fine on a different printer similar model. What could be the problem. Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the article.

I tried the same remedy for same problem on my printer, but the problem is not solved after cleaning the black sticky substance.

Please suggest what else should be checked and repaired.
