Car Electronics Repair

Is car electronics repair different than consumer electronics repair? I've got an email from one of my ERG members:

What I want to learn is how to repair the electronics inside the computers and modules in a car, when something goes wrong. When a computer in a car is faulty, it usually gets replaced with a new one. I want to learn how to fix the electronics in the old one, which is much cheaper for the customer.

So is learning how to repair electronics in a car, different to other electronics?

And here was my answer:

HI G.S,

Yes there are some different between repairing consumer electronics and car electronics repair. I have a car mechanic friend that used to send those car electronics board for me to repair. Here are the things that I have noticed:

1) Most of the circuit board are compact and some have lots of components making it difficult to check

2) Most of the board are covered by one kind of silicone glue and removing it was an hassle.

3) Part numbers used were customized especially on the IC and the transistor. You could hardly find those part number datasheet from internet or even databook

4) There is no proper load to test after repair. Most of the board are in module form and it was taken out from the car. That means if you have replaced the components you need to go back to the mechanic shop and let him fix it and test because your technical center does not have the complete set for the module to be tested. If you repair LCD TV/Monitor you can easily get a signal generator to test the equipment.

Despite the above problem yet there are still repair tech that have ventured into this car electronics repair field. Try search from AMAZON.COM for automobile electronic repairs and check out the content. Hope this helps.
