coby dvd player repair

Customer complains that when he plugs the player into the outlet an explosion occurred and some smoke came out of the player.

First thing I did was to open the player up and check for any sign of burnt component… I did not want to apply power because the complaint was smoke and explosion inside the player.

After that I notice a Capacitor shell with the markings of 10uf 16v (See picture) fell out of the player.

I look for where the Cap came from and I replaced it.

I did not stop there I continue checking the other surrounding components and found all to be good.

In the picture above  you will notice that the fuse is not a glass fuse but a piece of wire on the Circuit board. I unsoldered the wire and did the light bulb trick. The light bulb did not light, and the power came back On but there was no sound coming out from the speakers. I use some other speakers for comparison and the problem was still there. I began to trace the exploded cap and it leads me to a power amplifier IC TA8227P.

I suspected that this IC has been damage as well and I directly replace the IC and tried the radio again and there was sound from the speakers. Problem solved.

I repaired an old radio-cd player-catsetle player like this and its TA8227P IC is bad too. Its left channel still work but whole IC is too hot even with a heat sink

Did someone repair it before? That's dangerous to replace fuse with a piece of wire, you do a good job and replace fuse properly. Thanks sir for the article!

Nice repair andre. thanks for sharing. have you replace the wire with a fuse. because it can cause fire if you do not change it if happen that something to be shorted in primary?

Zed thank you and yes I did change it... I forgot to take a picture of it...maybe that is why the Cap blew out because the fuse was bypass. if the fuse was there the fuse would of blown instead of the Cap.

Good job sir.I will to know if there are any other professional ways to know if an IC is bad rather than suspecting it like you did. Thanks

Yes there is... if you check ECG or online for part number and understand what the IC does you can check for inputs and outputs. Jestine Young has ebook on SMPS where he give an example of testing PMW ic... You should check it out and from there you will have a general knowledge of IC operations.
