Computer SMPS Repaired
Received ATX SMPS stating problem SMPS is turning on but computer not working also it makes too much noise.
Smps brought to me by one college student he replaced SMPS for some another working SMPS it works perfect.
I connected SMPS on self-test, I noticed fan making noise but it spins for few minutes & then stop.
I opened the SMPS for inspection.
I found SMPS is full of dust.
Blow up Dust & took out the Circuit.
Cleaned The PCB using Thinner.
Now time to clean the FAN.
Now reassembled the SMPS for testing.
SMPS is revived …. Here Moisture with sticky substance causing some shorting hence SMPS is shutting down in protection made.

Comparing capacitor failures on the 3.3, 5 and 12V lines for modern PC supplies, would it be fair to say the 16V capacitors fail more often?

Secondary side capacitor failure is very rare.

Excellent cleaning and repair job that even included opening and cleaning the fan and lubricating it! Which is something that often never is so easy or successful afterwards.

I managed to get an EVGA 500W1 cheap only to learn the uncooled bridge rectifier could not take more than 3A, not a good thing for a 500W supply on 110V

Good news is that the board has room for two bridge rectifiers and so this was an easy fix.

Normal PC easily works on 250W SMPS...indeed early around year 1995 in India some companies provide 5 Years warranty on SMPS with good build quality.

I have seen everything while working on electronics and computers. I have removed dead insects and even articles of clothing from while working on repairs.

Insects also are prone to damage the circuit and are one of the cause.

Isopropyl alcohol is easy to find, is cheap and easy on the lungs.

You can Use NC Thinner or 99% ISO PROPYL Alcohol of any brand , Petrol is also used.

In TNY279 pin no. 1 is ENABLE & pin no.2 is Bypass connected to ground.
Check TNY279 pin no,1 feedback circuit components & capacitor grounded with pin no.2 or check by replacing TNY279 IC.

good repair and thanks for sharing. one thing comes to mind is the fan and would love to see the fan being replaced instead of being cleaned. I have seen fans failing even it was cleaned so that is my recomendation to replace when possbile instead of cleaning. have a blessed day

Normally this types of fan does not uses ball bearing,it just having shaft with plastic lock clip just clean & lubricate it(never use any type of Grease that accumulate dust & create further damage in bushing & shaft) that's all.
