Desktop Computer Front Headphone Connection Works Intermittently
Received One Desktop Computer stated problem when connecting headphone to front connector sometime it works sometime not.
On receiving computer, I checked on my setup & on connecting the headphone on front panel socket it starts working, I moved the pin a little still it works. Now removed the pin & connected on rear connection here also it is working, once again I removed from rear & connected again in front socket this time it is not working.
This type of behavior is because of corrupted Audio driver or Miss configuration in audio setting.
Checked all settings seems ok may be audio driver is corrupted, on doubt I uninstalled old audio driver & installed new audio driver. It needs rebooting of the computer hence I turned off the computer & restarted & again repeat the same process again for headphone testing.
Most of the time these types of intermittent problems are caused by software or the audio circuits on the motherboard. Finding the culprit for an intermittent problem is a very time consuming process. I asked the customer to wait a day so I could monitor the computer and the customer agreed. Next day I started the Computer & this time headphone does not work on front Panel socket. So I opened the Computer front panel for inspecting the connector circuit. Circuit looks Clean.
I removed two side screw & pull out the circuit for inspection.
Inspecting under magnifier glass I found the culprit.
It was dry solder on pins of front headphone socket.
Socket is designed such a way it detects pin insertion if you connect headphone then rear speaker connection will automatically get disconnected and same way it is behave from rear side if you connect pin in rear side pin it will disconnect front socket.
Also there is an option in audio setting, that you can disable insert detection option & you find both ports are working on the same time. After retouch soldering I connected circuit back to the front panel
After finishing the work, I tested the front panel by connecting headphone it was working, but earlier it was having intermittent problem so called the customer & explain him the situation and ask him to take the computer and use it for few days and let us know whether the problem is solved or not because customer is having work from the home & he is having daily conversation to his team so he requested me to get it done at earliest.
After a week I called the customer to know the status of the work… He asked for forgiveness from me… He was so busy in his work that he forgot the problem for which he gave me the computer to repair.
He told me problem seems solved, he is not having problem since the computer was repaired.

Well done Yogesh.
Those dry solder joints can create some really difficult intermittent faults at times.

Intermittent problems are the hardest ones to diagnose sometimes. Good job on the repair.
