HP Elite Book 840 G1 Repaired For Intermittent Power

Received Laptop stated problem battery not charging properly.
First I checked power cord & adapter on another working laptop found OK. Again connected the same charger on faulty Laptop it works good but I noticed when I move the laptop it is losing connection to laptop.
For confirm again I removed the battery from the laptop & powered through the charger laptop starts but on moving it goes off. Again I connected the charger to different working laptop & repeated the process of movement but it works fine on another laptop. It confirms the problem with the laptop & most suspected part is charging socket in the laptop.
Hence disassembled the laptop for further inspection to find out broken socket or dry solder.
Note: Remember the location of screws either by taking process wise photo or note down on the paper with rough layout diagram.
Removed Motherboard out of the case.
While disassembling the process I took Pics on my mobile, so that I can find out exact location of the screws on reassembling.
Using my hand held Magnifier I checked condition of the socket seems ok no any physical damage from the outside nor any dry solder. May be socket is damaged / broken from the inside.
For confirmation I need to arrange same socket for the testing. I did not find in my salvage box hence I ordered it to my part supplier. I received the socket after 2 Days. On arrival I started process of desoldering the socket.
Good tools play important role in quality soldering & desoldering Microscopic parts without damaging parts & PCB.
Essential tools required are
1) Microscope
2) Micro soldering iron station
3) Hot air Rework station
4) Good quality of flux.
5) Desolder wick etc….
6) Kapton tape if you using the Hot air station, for protecting nearby SMD Components.
Sadly, I do not have microscope yet, hence the process is little lengthy for me but I managed because of years of experience.
Always use Good quality flux which can transfer the heat effectively on target & you will get good result.
Never use Metal Iron Soldering Bits once it oxidized & turn to black it will worse your job.
Most of temperature controller Iron uses metal instead of copper. Use good quality Copper Bits. Removed charging socket & cleaned the solder pad using Flux & desolder wick.
After replacing the charging socket re assembled the Laptop for the testing.
After assembling the laptop, I powered the Laptop.
Checked with movement of the charging pin now No Problem.
Indicates old socket itself is internally damaged.
Now laptop is ready to pickup.

Although copper is known to be the best heat transfering metal, I'm not sure if most of my soldering bits are not also some sort of metal plated copper bits and also special long life metal bits? But I guess as long we keep the bits nicely cleaned and provided with enough new solder they always will work fine.

Albert,
Most of copper Soldering bits having Nickel coated & Are easy to clean using economical stainless steel kitchen scrubber Wire,Nickel plated Metal soldering bit once heated it does not allow solder to hold on the bit.

Mark J,
Charging sockets easily gets damaged because of heavy adapter pins.

I think you are right about soldering iron, for i am having this same challenges when using my temperature controller iron.If i use copper bit will it get better....in getting very hot.

Imoudu.O,
very hot iron will peel off copper traces,if we are not careful.
thank you!.

yes, charging ports fail very often and the problem I have in the shop is finding such ports that are good quaitly not just china made that breaks so easily and do not last long. recently I started buying donars boards and I could extract such original ports from that and most of time I find good quality ones. thanks for sharing and have a blessed day
