Home Theatre Stuck At Standby Repaired
By Jestine Yong on October 19, 2024
This Jeufel home theater was brought to me with complaint of being stuck at standby mode: when its pluged into ac socket, standby led is on, when on/off button is pressed, nothing happens…. device don’t power on.
So i opened top cover and did the needful before troubleshooting. First thing i sighted from mainboard is one charred non polar cap(824J/63) amongst a set of six in a row. Also noticed some bulged e-caps on both mainboard and smps.
So i decided to do further esr value test on the mainboard which i discovered some other e- caps are off the edge. Checked on/off press button with analog metre…it works intermittently.
Time for replacement operation: In my locality i could not source the exact type of non polar cap, so i replaced it with 105/400V, changed bad e-caps on both boards, then ready to test.
At this time, the customer walked in and witness it. Since the mechanical side is functioning, i slot in a dvd disc, connect to tv and it work very well. Unfortunately i didn’t remember to take a snap of the final result.
This article was prepared for you by Imoudu Onwumah from Nigeria. He is 62 years old and has just 3 years experience in electronics repairs. I started career in hotel industry as a chef, but then I was doing repairs only in electrical repairs as a hobbyist. In 2018, I decided to learn about electronics which through Jestine’s electronics e-books and holding my hand, am an electronics techie today.

Glad that you were able to fix this home theatre set Imoudu.
Finding non polar e-caps indeed can be tricky! But I suppose we always can make them out of two double capacity polarized e-caps connected in anti-serie with also the right total working voltage. If each e-cap at least is half of the max total voltage value we need.

Bipolar caps can be made by us by connecting two caps of double its value in series. For example, if the value of a bipolar is 10uF, you use 22uF in series, ensuring that one side is positive and the other end is negative, and in the middle both caps are joined. This would do! I have done that in many sets and have covered that in my articles too!
Anyhow, you have done a good job there!

Thanks for your educative comments, however this non polar cap does not have negative and positive poles and when connecting in series as u suggested which i have not done before, one will have to be mindfull of the correct voltage.
