Sooner or later, nearly all phone screens get cracked or broken. They suffer a lot of abuse. They get dropped, sat on, pushed up against sharp objects, or lent to kids that have no idea about how careful you need to be with these phones.

I was given an iPhone 6sPlus by a tradie (what we call tradesmen here in Australia) who was a painter. He uses his phone constantly & doesn’t treat it delicately. When I opened the phone, I found traces of paint drops throughout! The screen was so badly shattered that every time he answered a call, he would end up with a shard of glass in his ear!

Although screen replacement is generally not difficult, in this case, it was quite involved, with a lot of parts that needed to be changed over from the old screen to the new screen. My eyes aren’t what they used to be so most of the repair was done under a LED magnifying glass.

The first task is to remove the tiny screws that hold the screen frame to the body. These were pentalobe screws, but the appropriate screwdriver came with the kit. The screen may require some gentle heating from a heat gun to release it from the frame.

Hold the screen at 90∘to the base frame and bend no further as this would put strain on the ribbon cables that connect the accessories.

Remove the battery cable shield as well as the screen connector shield at the top of the screen. If you thought the first screws were small, they only get smaller from here!!

Ensure you remove the battery connector before continuing to protect the electrical system from any accidental shorting while you carry out the screen replacement. Gently remove the 3 connectors at the top of the screen (home button, camera & screen). Use a plastic spudger or something similar to prevent damage to the connectors.

Now the fun begins! Put the phone base to one side as quite a few components now need to be changed over onto the new screen. Remove the shield that covers the home button and connector. Once again, be aware of tiny screws!

Under a shield on the opposite side, is the earpiece. Gently remove this and put it to one side.

Next, the camera, proximity and light sensor must be removed. This might require gentle heat to separate the cables from one another as well as the screen.

Carefully remove the home button and set it aside.

Next, 7 screws need to be removed to separate the thermal plate from the touch screen. It is a good idea to use good quality screwdrivers when undoing these as the ones in the kit are pretty average and could lead to rounding of the screw heads.

Before changing over components onto the new screen, make sure that the protective plastic is removed. If this is not done, this will create all sorts of heat related issues.

After you are confident that the ribbon cables are clear, fit the backing plate to the new screen. Next install the home button, camera, earpiece & proximity sensor. The proximity sensor will have a little filter material that needs to be changed over as well. With the new screen, be aware that some come with a plastic camera mount and ear speaker rubber mount – others may need the original mounts changed over.

When the proximity sensor and ambient light sensors are in place, the camera is installed. The flex ribbon cable has 4 pads which, when in place, contact 4 springs mounted in the back of the camera.

Next, when all sensors and the home button are in place, install the covering shields. Once these are in place, tilt the LCD screen 90∘to the phone body and then gently fit the connectors back into place. These just require gentle pressure and then should ‘click’ into place. Make sure they are aligned correctly before applying pressure. Fit the shield plate when all connectors are in place. Don’t forget to reconnect the battery & its cover plate.

It’s time to fire it up and check all its functions before closing it up for a final time.

After holding an icon down for a few seconds, it should start to ‘wiggle’. You can now move it all across the screen. This shows that the touch screen has been connected correctly.

Test all the other features, including phone operation, text messages, sound from the speaker, camera (both still and video) & the internet connection. During a phone call, placing a finger over the proximity sensor should make the screen go dark, until the finger is removed.

Once all these tests are complete, the screen needs to be finally inserted back into the housing. This is accomplished by pushing the screen into locators at the speaker end of the phone. Next, apply pressure evenly toward the home button end of the screen and it should drop into the remaining locator clips. Finally, fit the 2 little pentalobe screws that hold the screen to the frame.

If all these features work correctly, then you have successfully replaced a broken screen!

It’s now time to hand it back to a satisfied customer.

      Hey Waleed,
I have not had that problem, probably because I do use the original button, but I have heard that this can be an issue.
      Thanks for sharing that information.
