Laptop Making Ticking Noise

Received Laptop for ticking noise problem.

laptop noise problem

Ticking noise indicates probably HDD making noise or CPU FAN. So I opened bottom cover for inspection.

Powered the laptop & I found noise coming from the fan, so for inspection I removed the fan.

On removal I found some FAN Blades were broken.

laptop fan broken

Discussed the problem & expenses to the customer for replacing new fan, by way of talking of the customer I found he was not in position to spend for the new part.

I told him wait for a day or two if I found in my salvaged box I will definitely help. I checked in my material salvage box but I did not found any. I cleared my position with him & I told him we can service the Fan & see if we can eliminate the noise. He is agreed upon my suggestion. I disassembled the FAN for servicing.

I cleaned the fan by dust out following cleaning with IPA then applying lubricating oil.

Re assembled the FAN & I spin it manually by finger, it spins smoothly without any noise.

Customer picked up his laptop from my location & he was so happy that I solved his problem in service charge only.

Good carried out cleaning job to get the fan back working. Maybe it was also still possible to glue on the missing blades by gluing on some new created look-alike plastic blades?

No Albert You Can't,Because this Molded one piece plastic blade unit is already in calibrated aligned mode when you add external blade it will misaligned whole spinning pattern and becomes unbalanced and Maybe becomes more noisy while spinning because of not matching weight & shape of the blade.

What an irony that we get such customers too! Anyhow, in all probability, it will come back soon! A good case shared by you, dear Yogesh!

I use to wonder why such people ever bring their devices for repair, knowing they have no money to pay.l have come across such persons a number of times ànd because of this, i inscribed on my advert banner"Do not bring your item here for repair if you don't have money to pay"

      Imoudu.O,
Electronics repair is a lot of hard work, in terms of time spent for troubleshooting. When we use materials like solder wire,de-soldering material, cleaning material, testing equipment etc.during troubleshooting customers equipment & customer simply deny for repair.Sometimes we think it's okay, at least he can refer someone, but such an experience has never happened.yes Sometimes I get a call from them that I have bought a new equipment and have given the old equipment to the junk dealer.

The fans were designed with blades so that as they run the blades blow air that helps to cool down overheating components, and that makes machines efficient . Pray hard that the laptop doesn't breakdown any time soon. Unwilling to pay and very watchful customers are the most stubbon. Good luck.

      Philip,
Maybe he thought he would change the fan himself afterwards.
In professional field many times it seems that if we have to work in front of a customer then we should fix the diagnosis charge from him in advance.

Greetings for your effort in solving the problem.

I agree with your answer to Albert's question. The molded piece does not permit blade insertions. Anyhow, one question remains: There was a concentration of blades on one side, which surely caused an imbalance in the assembly. The tendency in this case is to provoke vibration when spinning. This vibration tends to force the remaining blades, causing them to break too along time, proving the Parasuraman's assertion.

In this case, I understand that the same number of blades on the opposite side could be removed too, which tends to balance the molded piece, although causing less air flux.

      Henrique J. G. Ulbrich,
Good Opinion! Henrique, but when customer is not willing to pay for the proper solution then there is no sense to spend more time in R&D.

not a good way to do things but as long as the customer is happy then it is fine. since the some of the fins are broken it will not going to provide the right enough cooling for the CPU and there might be some ratteling going on inside the laptop. I would replace the whole fan which is the best thing to do. thanks for sharing and have a blessed day
