Lightning Tore Off Tracks In CCTV SMPS ERD-AD22
This SMPS was brought to me by a friend involved in CCTV supply, installation and maintenance. Though our acquaintance began from the Hospital where I work, this developed into a friendship, especially after he did the CCTV installation in my house. With a lot of costly sets lying around, many of which are antique type and could not be replaced, I did not want to take the risk of leaving the house without vigilance.
On opening the device for cleaning, I was taken aback to see that the bottom cover was having dark marks, and the tracks at a few places were torn due to lightning. Fuse, Bridge Rectifier, tank capacitor and the Off-line Switcher, LNK6666E were all found dead short. One PTC at the output was found torn apart.
After removing these shorted components, I did a ring test and found that the SMPS transformer was unaffected. All components in the secondary, except one PTC were ok.
So, I went ahead and replaced all the defective components and the electrolytic capacitors. Powered the device through a Serial Bulb and found it to be working still and it had survived!
As the typical disk type PTC was not available in the market, I used a jumper to close the circuit.
Mission accomplished to bring smiles on both me and the customer, and to shove in satisfaction to the collection.
