This Philips CRT TV with the model of 21PT2152/69R was brought to me for repair by a friend of mine. The complaint by him was no sound but when run on AV mode (sound) it was good.

I tested it and true enough even the volume already set to 72 (see photo below) the sound still can’t be heard.

Next I entered into the service mode by using few combination keys by following the steps below:

tv no sound fault

tv remote control service mode

phillips tv service mode

philips tv factory mode

eeprom fault in tv

eeprom code in tv

tv no sound

Bad news, even after change the setting in the service mode, the sound still would not come. I left only one choice which is to reprogram the EEprom IC. I kept lots of EEprom IC original programs for many different brands and I have this Philips Model -See the photo below:

tv eeprom ics

reprogram eeprom ic

I soldered the bad IC out from the circuit board and placed it onto the IC socket in the EEprom programmer. Once turned On, this programmer will overwrite the bad EEPROM data with the good data and the LED 3 will blink. If the blinking has stopped, the LED 3  will remain lit.

I took the IC out and soldered it back to  the TV board and turned On. Voila! the sound came back. Even before it hit 50 in the sound control I could already heard the sound.

eeprom tv problem repair

If in case still no sound then you may have to follow the procedure below to use the Compair software.

compair software

compair setup

philips compair eeprom set up

I would not cover this procedure since the TV now already working. If you want to be good in CRT TV repair you can get humphrey’s ebook HERE.

Very professional as always and quite a stock of Eeproms you keep Mr.Suranga! I don't want to be picky but I wonder though if it would not be much cheaper and a lot easier to use a universal Programmer like the TL886A and store all the Eeprom files on Disc or HDD? It also would save time and space I guess? And in the repair business time is good money. Thanks for the article.

Be sure and get the TL886A, not the TL886CS.

Indeed you are right Robert. Although there are people who buy the cheaper TL886CS and rebuilt it to the ICSP enhanced TL886A unit, so it can program and read IC's larger than the standard 40 Pins IC's by programming them Serial-In- Circuit. But than you don't have any warranty on the modified unit. And buying the better A version with the ICS Programming cable expension also prevents the user from not working IC or Firmware updates in future releases.

Yep, Plus If you upgrade the CS, you will have to find the connectors and components that come with the A to be able to take advantage of the ICSP.

      Hello Albert,
I have in my possession TL866CS, is TL886 different from TL866?
How is A superior to CS?
      Regards
      James

The program could be corrupted by many reasons.
The most of the reasons can be some power failure until the
device is communicating with the eeprom, maybe the most time
until there is a writing condition to the eeprom.
Other thinks can also corrupt the data like a bad eeprom ic
or a bad cpu or a worse firmware in the cpu but other kind of
      possibilities are too in counting...
      My best regards.

A good repair. Your eeprom stock is impressive. Would it be a better repair to use a new eeprom on the possibility that the old one has some other kind of fault? You could solder in an 8 pin socket and eliminate the possibility of heat damage to the new eeprom.

    Hey Suranga,
Great article as usual. Thanks for the explanation and diagnosis. After a previous article on this site, I bought a TL886A to try and reprogram some IC chips. But wouldn't you believe it - I haven't had an IC repair to do since! But I am looking forward to giving it a try when I get the chance.
Keep up with the good work!
    Cheers
    Mark

Hi Mark. You know the old saying, It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Plus, until you need it, you can still play with it.

      Mr Sagar

I think this Tv fault may be caused by bad
ABL Line or R.G.B circuit. Check first all resistors and diodes in ABL Line.
