portable radio bluetooth repair

Problem symptom: Radio Battery turned off within 10 minutes after full battery charging. So for reconfirming the problem I kept it for Battery charging it took 4 hours to fully charge the Battery, I turned ON the Radio it works for 15 Minutes &t automatically it gets turned Off.

So for further inspection I opened the Radio. Majorly for opening these types of radio you have to pull out front metal Grill so that you can remove the screws from inside.

Removed Battery for testing, after removing I found Battery is bulged. So I found the culprit removed the Battery & checked the voltage on the battery it shows 2.4V. for reconfirm the problem; I used 18650 Battery for operating the radio &  it works for more than 1 hour. so it is confirmed the original battery is faulty.

I removed the top plastic cover to see what make of battery is used. But it doesn’t have any marking on the Battery.

Now problem is to arrange same type /Size of the battery, Because Battery installation place is not having much space if you get some another battery with same type of the Connector.

Even after buying new battery if you modify it physically by cutting the wire connector or resolder the wires, it’s warranty becomes void.

I measured the dimension of the original Bad battery is 50mm X 34mm X 4mm. inquired with our local part suppliers none of them are having this type of battery to match the dimensions as well storage capacity. Battery should be above 800mAH capacity.

So first I decided to use external 18650 batteries with using OLD Battery BMS circuit till I arrange the new Battery. So as per decision I removed BMS Circuit from the OLD Battery. So I removed BMS Circuit.

I removed the BMS, still having wavering mind for using External Battery. I am just thinking of options meanwhile My wife came with cup of tea … she is owner of this Radio 😛 😛…. I discussed the situation.

With her, without any expression on leaving the place she told me why you are keeping old not working Mobile phones & other garbage when not in use & she left the place by glowing bulb in my mind. I rush towards my junk boxes to find some matching battery, on searching I found 3 good working Batteries of SONY Cybershot non-working Camera.

Battery Model is NP-BG1, size of battery is 40mm X 36mm X 7mm Battery width & Length is ok but height of battery is about 7mm. after installing it, back cover of radio will not get fit. I found one another Battery Model is BL-5C, it was bought by me few months back from one of our scrape vendor in our area. I checked Dimensions. It is exactly same as per my requirement 50mm X 34mm X 3mm and on line checked specification I found the capacity of this battery is 1000mAh. So first I checked this battery is working or not.

Battery showing 3.2v it is good indication. I removed Battery socket wire from the BMS of old Battery & Soldered only wires with connector to this new Battery.

So connected the battery to Radio for testing.

how to fix a broken radio

Turned ON the radio this time Radio starts & turned off within 4 to 5 minutes…. Now this battery also doubtful because it was not used or charged since I bought it. So I decided to take chance by fully charging it, so I kept the set on charging …it took 4 hrs. for fully charge.

Now I removed the set from the charging & turned the radio power ON ……you know what??  it works for 2hrs. till the time I got the call for laptop problem & I have to leave on the call. So I hand over the radio to my wife.

For further result I come to know this radio is working from last 3 days it runs 1 to 2 hour daily without charging. Assuming 8 hrs. a day nonstop. Where original battery was working not more than 4hrs when radio is new. So here I found the Good Upgrade option.

Although the battery fits I still wonder how you safely connect a BL-5C 3.7V pack that has 3 connector pads safely by only using two wires?
Because in a Nokia or other phone it always is also connected to a 3 pin charger connector. One of those probably checks the Li-ion temperature?

      Albert,
In this battery middle Pad is for BSI (Battery Status Indicator)used in device where charging Process is monitored. Mobile phone has a BSI resistor for identifying the battery pack placed in the phone. The BSI fixed resistor value indicates the capacity and chemistry of battery. It also tells the phone processor about the temperature and charging voltage and current passing to the mobile phone. The BSI resistor connected to ground and the phone measures the resistance between the BSI and Ground and tells the processor about the type of battery inserted into the phone.
in this Radio Player TP4056 Charging IC is Used, which does not required extra BSI Option.

Understood Yogesh! The TP4056 charging ic probably gets replaced by more economical 96% charging ic's soon? Like the MP2307 that is a step-down adjustable output voltage ic that doesn't work on dissipating heat like the 4056 because of the at 340KHz switching chip.
They are sold as Mini360 DC-DC Buck Converter Step Down Modules with MP2307 ic. And work from 4.75V-23V input to 1V-17V output voltage at 340KHz. And only measure 17x11x3.8mm in size and are for instance often used in Flight Control Modules.

Also using a TP5100 instead is 10% apparently more efficient than the TP4056. Both are linear chargers but because a 400mΩ resistor is required for the TP4056's input this causes a 10% decrease in efficiency.
In the TP5100's internal mosfet it is integrated as a 650mΩ "on" resistance.

Good repair and thanks for sharing. It is very hard to find matching batteries with the original ones. I am still looking for overdrive tiny car’s battery and so far no leaks clean with finding one. Have a blessed day
