HOW TO FIX SAMSUNG LCD TV

This lcd samsung tv was brought to me with complaint of no video but sound, having done primary checks, it was obvious the CCFL backlight  was bad.

So since these tube lamps are no more available, I informed the customer I can only modify tv to use led strips, which he agreed to.

CCFL BACKLIGHT OF SAMSUNG LCD TV

I had ‘old used’ led strips which i decided to use. But before using the old strips, i replaced all leds bulb on each strip with new ones using  crude method and it was a success operation, pictures will explain better.

MODIFY LED TV

solder led light in led tv

So how to power the intended modified backlight becomes an issue since there is no way i can get external led driver…not available in my country. So i decided to try this ceiling lamp leds’ driver. Having removed  tv panel, i arranged the 3 strips, (3 ×9leds=27),  having calculated the space in between, wired them in series, then at back chassis i connected the led driver output to led strips, then sourced a/c voltage(220v) from tv power board to input of led driver.

led driver modification to lcd tv

Then i plug tv to a/c wall socket, tv backlight lit before powering On tv. When i measured out put dc voltage to led strips, it was about 72.10V, about 2.7v/led.

led tv modification

Then i re-assembled the sheets, then place panel ensuring it fits well into its lined space, then placed the metal frame holder which needs to be screwed to hold panel in place.

It was when i was tightening one of the screws at the upper angle 90 degree that i heard cracking sound, i checked, alas panel has cracked at the angle. Well, I assembled the tv and power On, video and audio was good but crystal liquid had leaked at that cracked portion forming a dark spot. So called customer and when he saw it, he went berserk with me and a lot argument ensued. For he wants me to replace the panel and i refuse to do that for a tv of about 11 years old. So at the end of the day i had to hand over my sitting room tv to him to appease him for peace sake, which he collected.

Disadvantage of this kind of modification is when tv is at standby mode the backlight will be and stay ‘On’. Advantage is that when one or more leds go dead, burnt or shorted, the remaining leds will still be On and backlight will not shut down, so picture will still be showing. The following pictures will explain better. This is the finished sad repaired work.

Oh! My God! That was bad luck, which sometimes happens to every one of us! While fixing the panel back, we have to ensure that it is seated properly in its soft side beds. Otherwise, it will crack for sure! Anyhow, you have compromised the situation and got out of it for good! Many thanks for sharing and wish you all the best next time onwards!

You took a huge risk in trying to fix such an old already hopelessly defect TV and in the process only lost your own TV to a very demanding bad customer!

This is just one of the many examples why I personally think fixing modern LCD TV's is a big gamble!
Also because in modern led backlight TV's (LG and others too!) the backlight goes bad just from the glued on diffuser lenses that fall off and no longer stick causing way too bright white sun spots in those spots. Which happens 'of course' after only a couple of years when the warranty time already had expired.

I have done that so many times and in this situation you have two choices, either you move on and learn from it or get stuck in that situation… we are humans, we do mistakes so do not get discouraged brother and move on. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed day.

I learned that lesson as well - except it cost me some cash. Never again! Now I tell the customer right upfront that I am not responsible for cracked panels due to the high risk. These TV's aren't meant to have the panels removed. Hope you were able to replace your TV, maybe with a better one.

Imoudu... I feel your pain exactly.
I was making a similar repair on a very nice TV set that whose diffusers were falling off.
First time doing it so I had to research using optically clear adhesives and how to set it and everything.
I got everything together but 1 diffuser fell and there was a bright spot. I could have just left it alone... I SHOULD have just left it alone but I couldn't. Disassembled everything and set the diffuser in properly.
Put everything together just to find that I had slightly damaged one of the film connectors leading to the display.... I had lines and artifacts near the damage. Totally disgusted! Live and learn!

Oh wow I hate that happened to you after all the hard work upgrading to led backlight, and the customer going off on you when the tv was junk anyway, I have had that problem when repairing lcd-led sets in the past, on the larger 65” and up sizes.

You are quite right concerning Lg led tv, there is lg 43" smart tv on my work bench which is 8 years old and its panel is already having horizontal lines and i adviced owner to discard it.It's a huge risk in handling any repair that has to do with panel. Infact my wife adviced me not to be doing such repair again. Anyway thanks for your comments.

Imoudu, this was a very bad experience. You know, these mishaps happen to every technician, it's a risk we have to bear. Sometimes we meet customers who understand such misfortune and there are some bad guys like the one you met. All in all, let's not get discouraged by such kind of guys.

    Good Job! Imoudu,
every time there is a new lesson from every repair....I am having one Idea to skip these type of errors by asking customer to try to fit the panel under our guidance This will have two benefits..
    1) 100% blaming is avoidable.
    2) Customer will come to know what he is paying for.....ha ha just kidding.

Sorry to hear the customer would not be reasonable with you! Trying to keep peace is important so I think you handled things the best with another tv.
At restaurants I hear customers DEMAND this or that. Non examples for sure.
Do not let bad customer get you down.
