USB Port Tester Making
Standard problem when visiting customer place for computer troubleshooting in laptop & desktop when we connect the pen drive some time it works some time it gives errors some time; USB mouse also some time detects some time not. searching on net I found this circuit diagram for reference. So for simplifying process I made this USB Port tester. I took one broken USB Male connector, 2-nos. 1KΩ Resistors & 5mm LED in Blue /Green/RED color, one each.
Now time to process the soldering ……………
Ready after solder. Did you say one LED is Missing??
As per the circuit diagram there are 3 different colors of LED is used.
- GREEN for Power OK.
- RED is for Error i.e. +5v & Ground is reversed.
- Blue – is Data indicator (When you plug the tester you get message on the screen of the computer “USB Device not recognized” & Blue LED Blinks, it indicates data signal is also working.
When I opened my LED Box I found some Bi directional LED (Green & RED color). Hence instead of using two LED (Red & Green) for power line testing I used only one Bi directional LED (Green & RED color), which indicates both the direction of the power. Now is the time to test.
On connecting to the USB port Green LED lights up showing power is OK
& Blue LED Blinks with message on computer screen.
By the way this project is just for R&D & not having proper housing for this USB dongle. Hence kept it on hold till find the solution.

Small and easy to make useful gadgets are always much appreciated Yogesh! Maybe it helps if you use tiny 1206 or 0805 smd leds to solve the housing problem. Recently I 3D printed a cheap USB cable tester with this housing for me and a good friend: https://www.printables.com/model/115638-case-for-usb-cable-tester. The board is this one.
