Shorted Degaussing Coil
By Jestine Yong on May 7, 2009
So far i have not come across any shorted Degaussing coil before but i do came across a leak (black tape open) degaussing coil that touches the cold ground (the metal that locked the PC Tube) that had caused the ELCB to trip whenever you apply the AC power. If you need to check on the condition of this coil, you can use a Blue Ring Tester to check it and it should have many LEDs lit. Assuming if the degaussing coil have problem you can always salvage another good coil from a junk Monitor and use it.

Hi Jestine,
Beside degaussing coil, what others component in a monitor causes ELCB to trip when we apply AC power?
I have a monitor causes the ELCB to trip. Found a FET and 2 resistors faulty near the primary side of the SMPS transformer.

HI Austin,
If the power supply have Varistor then it can tripped. Fet casing shorted to hot ground also could trip.

Hi Jestine,
I have what looks like a small split opening in the black tape. When the degauss coil runs it has problems getting that corner, gets extremely close to being perfect while running for the 5s, but the end when it shuts off, it spikes that corner and leaves a large magnet spot. I can wipe it clean with a separate deguasser or wiping a magnet on the tube shielding panel there works very well, gets it perfect and stays like that until degauss runs.

Is possible to fix the split with electrical tape or something similar? does the coil have larger problem there.

Hi Stewart,
Have you tried closing it using black tape?
