Saving Computer SMPS Part – 9

atx repair

These two Computer SMPS belonged to the hospital where I work and was brought to me in dead condition. Preliminary cleaning was already done by the IT Administrator saving that work for me.

Case (1) Zebronics-ZEB-N450W : The following pictures are self-explanatory and it would give you all an idea of dry solder joints on the board:

As usual, when I checked the ESR of caps and its values, these were way out and I replaced all of them on the board and retouched the board thoroughly, cleaned and checked for any man-made shorts.

As I could not find any and felt very satisfied with my job, I applied power, connecting its SMPS fan, which I had already lubricated, a 25W 12V bulb as load and my ATX tester. I was very glad to see the result, which I am sharing below:

You can have a look at the values of the tank capacitors, as a proof of my statement:

Case (2) FOXIN-FPS500C : In this, I found one 470uF/16V capacitor bulged. As I had already done a work on this long back, the board was good with solder joints intact. Nevertheless, I replaced all the electrolytic capacitors except the tank capacitors, which were replaced during my last service and found to be ok.

The SMPS fan was found hard to rotate and I lubricated it peeling the label in the centre and the locking cap. Then I re-fixed the cap and label as how it was before.

Then when I applied power, in the same way as explained above, the SMPS was found working very well.

As soon as they make replacing those e-caps as easy as simply plug-and-play on easy press-fit insertion sockets you will have a much easier job dear Parasuraman! Or maybe even e-caps that are simply screw-in-able in a socket. It wouldn't be impossible since all those e-caps are always round and mostly standing up anyway!
