Testing Flyback Transformer With Digital Meter?

By on July 29, 2013

I don’t have a flyback transformer tester how can I test it with a digital meter. What is the difference in flyback transformer can I just replace with any of same size and same legs though written numbers are different. Is there any equivalent?

Answer:

You need to use the blue ring tester to test the primary winding of the flyback transformer because digital meter can’t check it. A shorted winding still checked to be good. Digital Multimeter could only check if there is shorted winding between the primary and the secondary winding. For replacement you need the exact part number or any number that the supplier can suggest. Even though all flyback transformer underneath have 10 pins not all have the same pin configuration. The primary winding can be pin 1 and 2, in some model it can be pin 3 and 4 and so on.

If you check the flyback primary winding off board the a Blue Ring tester will show full LEDs lighted up. Next is all the secondary winding (feedback and aux windings).  It depends on the inductance of the secondary winding. If it has low inductance value generally the Ring tester would only show between 1 to few LEDs. If you check the heater windings (which is very low inductance) the LEDs may goes off.
You need to test the flyback offboard and not on board. If primary winding shows full LEDs then secondary winding usually not shorted but you need to know that you are doing a static test. This means the flyback may still be not working if you put in under full load test (Dynamic test) . It other words the flyback can breakdown when under full load.

Flyback will not start even though there is b+ voltage
