Customer Was Thrilled To Get Back This Lovely Cassette Radio Sony CFM-D1J
You might wonder why such a caption for a Radio Cassette Corder! It belonged to a very famous social personality, a humble retired Teacher, a Story Writer for Films and was brought to me through one of my regular customers, who was very intimate to him. The Radio was being used by the customer’s wife and it stopped working after not using it for a long time and though he tried to get it serviced, many technicians declined to accept it.
That’s how he stumbled upon me because of a casual exchange of niceties between these two friends! I could read a sort of relief when I said that it could be brought back to working condition and I had all the spares required for such sets.
The set was opened and subjected to thorough cleaning and dismantled totally.
Then I lubricated all the controls and switches. On applying power, I could listen to the Radio working very well. What might have gone wrong then? The switches had collected dust and fungus as the set was left unused for a long time. So, just normal cleaning helped it return back to working condition. After this, I did a thorough retouch of the board and cleaned it thoroughly using IPA. Assembled the set back and allowed it to run for a couple of days both as Radio and Cassette player.
It worked splendidly, bringing satisfaction to get collected. I also cleaned and polished the cabinet well. Unfortunately, I forgot to click the finished set! The customer was overwhelmed and relieved to get back the set in working condition and his wife joined him too.

Dust, fungus and do not forget some rust do not stop you from fixing even the most difficult defect electronic sets back in to excellent working condition!

In a way, all these are our agents, without which a set is not likely to visit us! We have to be thankful for them! Lizards, cockroaches, insects, rats, even snakes sometimes are all our agents, apart from the Electricity Board through surges and spikes, and weather through lightning, dampness etc.! (LOL) Many thanks for your expert comments and observation!

Yes, because of its quality, which is missing nowadays. Now, sets are manufactured only to last for 3 to 5 years, after which it will become defective and spare parts would have already become obsolete! Even most of the availabe spare parts are spurious making things very difficult for technicians like us. Many thanks, dear!

Dust and lack of maintenance can account for quite a number of needed repairs.
Thanks for sharing Parasuraman!
